Acura Radio Code Not Working? How to Reset, Find and Enter It

CODE (or ENTER CODE) means the anti-theft system has locked the audio unit. Acura owner's manuals explain that the radio disables itself whenever it loses power - a dead or disconnected battery, a battery replacement or a removed radio fuse - and asks for its five-digit code the next time you turn it on. Nothing is broken: the radio only needs the code that belongs to its serial number.

Newer models can show a code entry screen instead of CODE, and their owner's manuals give a different fix - see the reset section below.

If the radio rejects the code, it is almost always one of these:

• The code belongs to a different radio. The code is tied to the radio serial, not to the car. If the radio was ever replaced, the card in the glovebox may be for the old unit - compare it with the serial the radio shows.
• Radio code vs navigation code. Cars with navigation have two codes, and the navigation code will not unlock the audio unit (see the difference below).
• A digit slipped. Acura owner's manuals say: if you make a mistake, do not start over - finish the five-digit sequence, then enter the correct code.
• Too many tries. You get ten tries. After ten wrong codes the radio stops accepting entries (owners report the display shows E or ERR). The manuals say to leave the system on for one hour, then try again.
• Wrong entry method. Most Acura radios take the digits on the preset buttons (1-6). The first-generation TSX (2004-2008) uses the TUNE knob instead: turn it to choose a digit, press it to store the digit.

Honest answer: an Acura radio that shows CODE or ENTER CODE has no reset, bypass or factory trick - it unlocks only with the code that matches its serial. Disconnecting the battery again does not remove the code request, because losing power is what triggers it.

Newer models work differently. Recent Acura owner's manuals (for example the 2022 ILX) describe a code entry screen that you clear without a code:

1. Set the power mode to ON.
2. Turn on the audio system.
3. Press and hold the audio power button for more than two seconds.

The system reactivates when the audio unit reconnects with the vehicle's control unit. If it does not, the manual says to have the audio unit checked by a dealer. Older units with a CODE display still need the code.

Acura and Honda owners often mix these up. They are two separate codes, and in most cases you only need the radio code:

• Radio (audio) code: a 4 or 5 digit anti-theft PIN that unlocks the stereo after a power loss. It is derived from the radio serial number and is what most people are looking for.
• Navigation code: a separate code used by some older navigation units to unlock the nav/DVD module. It comes from the navigation unit serial, not the radio serial.

• Glovebox: Acura says the radio and navigation serial numbers are on an anti-theft card or a sticker inside the glove compartment.

Step 1: Get Your Radio Serial Number

You'll need your radio's unique serial number. There are two main ways to get it:

Option A: Use the Radio Display

1. Turn the radio on. It must show "CODE".
2. Turn the radio off.
3. Press the preset 1, preset 6 and power buttons at the same time, then quickly release.
4. The serial appears in two halves: U plus the first four digits, then L plus the last four (for example U1234 and L5678). Write them together as one 8-digit number: 12345678.

Option B: Check the Label

If the display method does not work (newer touch-screen units may not show it this way), check the glovebox: Acura puts the radio serial on an anti-theft card or a sticker inside the glove compartment, and the radio code card from the owner's manual kit lists it too. As a last resort the label is on the radio itself.
