Locating the S/N on Your Radio

To get the correct radio code, you will need the radio serial number from your Ram 5500's radio unit.

You can usually find it on the radio body. Common labels to look for: S/N, SN, Serial, Serial Number.

1. Get the S/N from Ram 5500's Screen

Most Uconnect-equipped vehicles can display the radio serial number right on the display using a hidden diagnostic menu called Dealer Mode (also known as Engineering Mode). This means you can retrieve the serial number without removing the radio from the dashboard.

Uconnect 8.4" Classic (2013–2018)

Method 1 – Climate Controls:

  1. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON (engine off).
  2. Simultaneously hold the Up, Down, and Front Defrost climate buttons for 5 seconds.
  3. The Dealer Mode menu will appear on screen.
  4. Navigate to: System InfoRadio Part InfoSerial Number.

Method 2 – Temperature Buttons:

  1. Hold the Temperature Up (red) and Temperature Down (blue) buttons together for 5 seconds.
  2. The Engineering Menu will appear.
  3. Navigate to: System InfoRadio Part InfoSerial Number.

Uconnect 8.4" NEW (2019+) & 12-inch

  1. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON.
  2. Press the bottom-left and bottom-right edges of the physical screen bezel simultaneously until Dealer Mode appears.
  3. Navigate to: System InfoRadio Part InfoSerial Number.

Important Press the physical bezel edges, not the touchscreen surface.

Uconnect 7" (e.g. Jeep Compass)

  1. Hold the Temperature Up and Temperature Down buttons for 5 seconds.
  2. The Engineering Menu will appear.
  3. Navigate to: System InfoTarget Main DataSerial Number.
Note: Some 2020+ models may have Dealer Mode disabled after a software update. If none of the methods above work, the radio must be physically removed to locate the serial number label on the unit. See our full Uconnect Dealer Mode guide with video tutorials, or our Uconnect radio removal guide for step-by-step instructions.

2. The Serial Number on the Radio Sticker

To find the serial number, you'll need to pull out the head unit out.

  1. Start by turning off the vehicle and taking off the dashboard bezel.
  2. Next, release the clips and pull the unit forward to check the label on the side of the radio. Be careful not to damage the cables.
  3. Write down the serial number carefully and then come back to our website.
  4. Know that serial number and part number are not equal. You will find both of them on the unit, but you only need for the serial.

Physical Radio Removal (if Dealer Mode is unavailable)

If the on-screen method is not available on your vehicle, the radio can be physically removed to read the serial number label on the top, side, or back of the unit:

  1. Remove the trim bezel – Gently remove the dashboard trim surrounding the radio using a plastic trim removal tool. The bezel is held by friction clips.
  2. Unscrew the mounting bolts – Remove the 4 mounting screws (usually Torx or Phillips) securing the radio to the dash frame.
  3. Slide the unit forward – Gently pull the radio out far enough to see the label. Do not disconnect the wiring harness unless necessary.
  4. Locate the serial number label – Look for a white or silver sticker with a barcode on the top or side of the unit. The serial number is a 14-character alphanumeric code (e.g. T00AM394958584).

For step-by-step guidance with video tutorials for specific vehicles, see our Uconnect radio removal guide.

The radio uses serials starting with T00AM (14 chars), TM9, or A2C (newer Uconnect). The serial label is on the body of the radio unit.

Common Ram 5500 Radio Code Situations

Your radio may lock automatically when it detects a power interruption.

These are the most common scenarios that trigger the radio code prompt.

Lock After a Battery Change

When the battery is disconnected, the Ram 5500 radio enters anti-theft mode.

This security feature is designed to protect the original head unit by disabling the radio after power loss.

Additional Scenarios Where Radio Requires a Code

  • Even a quick battery boost can wake the anti-theft system.
  • Replacing the head unit with a different one requires the code for that specific unit.
  • A fuse replacement can interrupt the radio and trigger the security lock.
  • ECU reflashing may trigger the anti-theft mode on some Ram 5500 units.

Things to Try First

Looking for a free Ram 5500 Radio Code? Actually, you may find it.

In some cases, your code may already be available in the vehicle or in the documentation.

Checking these sources can save you time and money before using an online lookup tool.

Below are the most reliable places to look.

Check Inside the Dashboard Area

  1. On a label in the glove compartment.
  2. In the maintenance records provided with the car.
  3. Near the trunk lining, where some manufacturers place radio labels.
  4. In the user guide, often on a separate code card.
  5. On the back of the radio if the unit was previously removed.

Can You Get a Ram 5500 Radio Code from the Dealer?

A Ram dealer can usually retrieve the security code using your 5500's vehicle identification number.

In most cases, you need to contact the service department or visit the dealership and show vehicle documents.

Once verified, they can generate the original unlock code for your radio.

Downsides:

  • Some older Ram 5500 radios may require manual lookup.
  • You usually need to visit in person and bring vehicle paperwork.
  • Dealers often charge a fee for the lookup service and it's sometimes more than 100$.
  • The process can take hours depending on the model and database.

Entering the Anti-Theft Code on Your 5500

Once you have the unlock code, it's time to input it into the Ram 5500's radio.

The locked radio will usually show an "ENTER CODE" message.

Use the built-in buttons or touch controls to select each number, then press OK to activate the stereo.

To enter the unlock code on your Uconnect radio:

  1. When the radio is locked, the screen will display "ENTER CODE" or show four dashes (----).
  2. Use the on-screen keypad (touchscreen models) or the preset buttons (non-touchscreen models) to enter each digit of your 4-digit code.
  3. After entering all 4 digits, the radio will unlock automatically – no need to press a confirm button.

Tip: Make sure you enter the code carefully. Three incorrect attempts will trigger a temporary lockout.

Lockout Warning: Uconnect radios allow 3 incorrect code attempts before triggering a lockout timer. During lockout, the screen may display "WAIT" or go blank. You must leave the ignition in the ON position for approximately 60 minutes to reset the attempt counter. Do not turn off the ignition during the lockout period, as this will restart the timer. After the lockout period, you get 3 more attempts.

5500's Radio Code FAQs

Many factory radios use a radio unlock code, but not every model year require one.

Whether a code is needed depends on the installed head unit and the vehicle generation.

Free radio codes are uncommon.

Some service documents may help, but most codes require a database lookup.

The only free way would be to check your car and its glovebox to see if you already have the code.

Yes. Each radio unit has its own security code.

If you install a different radio, you'll need the code for that particular device.

Uconnect is the infotainment system developed by Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and used across Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo vehicles. Most Uconnect radios feature an anti-theft protection system that activates whenever the radio loses power – for example after a battery replacement, a dead battery, or electrical work.

When triggered, the radio displays "ENTER CODE" and won't work until the correct 4-digit unlock code is entered. The code is permanently tied to the radio's serial number, not the vehicle's VIN, which is why finding the serial number is the first step to unlocking.

Yes, in most cases. Uconnect systems from 2013 onwards feature a hidden Dealer Mode (or Engineering Mode) diagnostic menu that shows the serial number right on the display. You can access it by holding specific button combinations – no tools or radio removal required.

However, some 2020+ models may have had Dealer Mode restricted via software updates. If you cannot access the on-screen menu, the radio must be physically removed to read the serial number label on the unit. See our full Dealer Mode guide for step-by-step instructions with video tutorials.

Yes. The 12-inch Uconnect display found in newer Ram 1500, 2500, and 3500 trucks still uses the same anti-theft protection system. If the battery is disconnected or replaced, the radio will lock and require a 4-digit unlock code.

To access Dealer Mode on the 12-inch screen, press the bottom-left and bottom-right edges of the physical screen bezel simultaneously. Navigate to System Info → Radio Part Info to find the serial number.
