Common Audi A3 Radio Code Problems

Many owners encounter radio lock problems on their A3 after electrical work.

Below are the most typical situations when this can occur.

Battery Change Lock (Most Common)

A dead battery is the most common reason a Audi A3 radio asks for a code.

Even a brief voltage drop is enough to activate the built-in security system.

Additional Scenarios Where Radio Requires a Code

  • After an ECU reset, software update, or electrical repair, some Audi A3 radios display a CODE message.
  • If a fuse is pulled, the radio can enter anti-theft mode.
  • After a jump-start, the radio may reset and request a security code.
  • When the radio is replaced, it usually requires the original code.

Places to Check Before Buying a Radio Code

Want free Audi A3 Radio Code? Actually, you may find it.

In few cases, your code may already be available in the vehicle or in the documentation.

Check these places to save time and money before using an online generator.

Below are the simplest places to look.

Check the Vehicle Paperwork

  1. Inside the glovebox, sometimes on a label.
  2. On the head unit itself, if it was serviced earlier.
  3. In the spare wheel area, on a radio label.
  4. In the radio manual, often on a sticker page.
  5. In your maintenance booklet from the previous owner.

Getting It from the Dealer

A Audi dealer can usually look up the radio code using your A3's VIN.

In most cases, you need to visit or contact them and show vehicle documents.

Once verified, they can generate the original anti-theft code for your radio.

Not Always Ideal:

  • Dealers often charge a fee for the lookup service and it can cost more than 100$.
  • The process can take days depending on the model and database.
  • You usually need to visit in person and bring vehicle paperwork.
  • Some older Audi A3 radios may require manual lookup.

How to Find the Serial N. on a A3's Radio

To retrieve the correct unlock code, you will need the serial number from your Audi A3's head unit.

You can usually find it directly on the screen. Common labels to look for: S/N, SN, Serial, Serial Number.

1. Displaying the Serial Number on the A3 Screen

If your Audi A3 has an RNS-E navigation unit, you can view the serial by holding 1 + 6 while turning the radio on. All other units — Chorus, Concert, Symphony — do not support this and require physical removal.

2. Finding the Serial Number on the Radio Unit's Sticker

To find the serial number, you'll need to pull out the head unit out.

  1. Start by turning off the ignition and taking off the dashboard bezel.
  2. Next, release the clips and slide the radio out to check the label on the side of the radio. Pay attention not to damage the connections.
  3. Write down full serial number carefully and come back to the website.
  4. Know that serial number and part number are not equal. You will find both of them on the sticker, but you only care for the serial.

Removing Your Audi Radio with VAG Keys

To remove the radio from your Audi A3, use a pair of VAG extraction keys — the same U-shaped tools used on VW, Skoda, and SEAT vehicles. Insert them into the round holes on each side of the radio until the clips release, then slide the unit out.

Most Common Audi A3 Serial Number Formats

To decode your radio, locate the serial that starts with AUZ (typical format: AUZ1Z1K1234567). Some units may show a VWZ prefix instead. The serial is 13 characters long and sits on a label on the unit itself.

Entering the Radio Code on Audi A3

You need to input the radio security code into the system to unlock your Audi's radio.

In the locked unit, the screen usually shows a code prompt.

Based on the radio, use control knob, touchscreen, or radio presets to enter the numbers, then submit the code to restore radio functionality.

If you make a mistake multiple times, you may cause the A3's head unit to enter lockout mode.

When this happens, your screen can display messages like "CODE ERR", "ERROR", or a blank screen.

To unlock the system, you usually need to leave the radio powered for a shown waiting period or up to a full hour before trying again.

Audi A3 & S3 Radio Code — 1st Gen & 2nd Gen

Everything explained on this page applies to all Audi A3 and S3 generations covered here: 1st Gen (1996–2003) and 2nd Gen (2003–2013). The S3, available in both generations, shares its radio systems with the standard A3 — the unlock process is identical. The radio unlock process — finding the serial number, submitting it, and entering the 4-digit code — is the same across both generations. The main difference is which head unit was factory-fitted and how the serial is accessed.

Whether your A3 or S3 shows "SAFE" or "CODE" after a battery change, the steps are identical regardless of the generation. Enter your serial number in the form above and you'll receive the correct code for your specific unit.

A3 & S3 Generation Guide

A3 / S3 1st Gen (1996–2003)

First generation A3 and S3 models were typically equipped with Audi's Concert or Symphony head units, often manufactured by Blaupunkt. The serial number is printed on a label on the top or side of the unit and follows an AUZ#### or BP#### format. Physical removal of the radio is required — use VAG extraction keys (two pairs of flat metal keys inserted into the four slots on the radio face) to release the unit from the cage.

Code entry is performed using preset buttons 1–4 to cycle each digit from 0 to 9, then confirm with the scan/seek button. The display shows a four-digit code entry screen when the unit is locked.

A3 / S3 2nd Gen (2003–2013)

The 2nd Gen A3 and S3 (8P platform) used the Concert II, Symphony II, or optionally the MMI infotainment system on higher specification models. Serial numbers continue to use the AUZ#### format. On the Concert II and Symphony II, VAG extraction keys are used to remove the unit and read the label. On units that support it, holding button 1 + RDS simultaneously while the unit is locked will display the serial number on screen.

Code entry uses preset buttons 1–4 for Concert/Symphony units. MMI-equipped models use the MMI rotary controller to select and confirm each digit on screen. Always confirm the serial format before submitting.
