Searching for the Serial Number on a C-Max
The only thing you'll need to find the corresponding code is your radio's serial number. VIN or other details are not required.
On almost all Ford models, you can find it in these common spots:
- Displayed on the radio screen (in some cases by using specific button presses)
- On the radio unit itself - you'll need to pull it out and write down the serial number (which is not as hard as it seems)
Search for a label such as: Serial Num. or SN.
1. Viewing C-Max's S/N on the Display
Some Ford radio models can display the serial number on the display using button combinations. The method depends on your specific radio model.
Ford 6000CD
- Turn the ignition to ON and power on the radio.
- Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously.
- The display will cycle through several codes – write down the serial number that appears.
- Confirm with button 5 or ENTER if required.
Note: On the 6000CD MK2 variant, use the # button or preset 5 for confirmation.
Ford 4500 RDS E-O-N
- Press and hold preset buttons 2 and 6 simultaneously.
- The serial number will be displayed (format:
M123123). - If button 5 does not confirm, try the TA button instead.
Ford Sony MP3
- Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously.
- The serial number appears on screen (e.g.
SOCD6X8V404077). - Hold the center button for 3 seconds to confirm.
Ford Travelpilot EX / NX / FX
For Ford navigation units:
- Check for a pull-out label on the right side of the radio unit.
- Alternatively, press and hold the SELECT button on the right turn-wheel.
2. The Serial Number on the Radio Sticker
The serial number is usually located on a sticker attached to the radio casing.
Step 1: Turn off the car.
Step 2: After that, take off the surrounding panel.
Step 3: Then release the mounting clips.
Step 4: Carefully slide the unit out partially (Be careful not to damage the cables).
Step 5: Look for the serial on the side of the unit.
Step 6: Write down the full number carefully and come back here so that we can generate your code.
Important: Be careful not to mix the Serial Number for the Part Number!
Ford Radio Removal Guide
Use radio extraction keys to remove the unit. Insert into the slots on each side of the radio, release the clips, and slide the unit forward. The serial label will be visible on the top or side of the housing.

Usual Serial Prefixes on Ford C-Max Radios
To unlock your radio, locate the serial number starting with M or V (e.g. V654321). TravelPilot EX/NX units have a pull-out label on the right side with a BP prefix.
Common Ford C-Max Radio Code Problems
Facing a locked Ford C-Max radio? Usually, it was triggered by one of these well-known situations.
Radio Lock After Battery Replacement
When the battery is disconnected, the Ford C-Max radio requests a security code.
This factory protection system is designed to protect the original head unit by disabling the radio after power loss.
Other Possible Causes
- After an ECU reset, software update, or electrical repair, some Ford C-Max radios ask for a code.
- When the radio is removed, it usually requires the original code.
- If a fuse blows, the radio can lock itself.
- After a boost start, the radio may lose power and request a security code.
Quick Things to Check
Before you decide to pay, it's worth checking a few places where the code is often stored.
Some owners find their Ford C-Max radio code without needing any tools or paperwork.
Here are the easiest things to check first.
Search the Vehicle Documents
- On a label in the glove compartment.
- On the head unit casing if the unit was previously removed.
- Near the boot panel, where some manufacturers place radio labels.
- In the owner's handbook, often on a separate page.
- In the maintenance records provided with the car.
Requesting It from the Dealer
Dealerships can retrieve your radio code by checking the vehicle records in their system.
They typically require proof of ownership before sharing the security PIN.
This is the official way to restore access to the factory radio.
Downsides:
- You may need to contact service support during business hours.
- Dealers frequently charge a service fee (sometimes more than 100$).
- The lookup is often not instant and may require waiting.
- Some imported or older radios may not be in their database.
Entering the Radio Code on Ford C-Max
Once you have the Ford's unlock code, you can enter it using the infotainment controls.
Most radios display a "CODE", "ENTER CODE", or "----" message when they are locked.
You typically use the preset buttons to select each digit.
After entering the full code, the radio will unlock automatically.
To input the unlock code on your Ford radio:
- Turn the ignition to ON and power on the radio.
- The display will show "CODE" or "ENTER KEY CODE".
- Use the preset buttons (1–4) to enter each digit of your 4-digit code. Press each button the number of times corresponding to the digit (e.g. press button 1 three times for digit 3).
- After entering all 4 digits, press button 5 or ENTER to confirm.
Tip: On some Ford models (e.g. Sony MP3), you can enter the code directly using the numbered buttons instead of cycling preset buttons.
Why Do C-Max Radios Use a Security Code?
When the radio is cut off from power, it immediately locks and requires an anti-theft code to be entered before it can be operated.
A factory radio code (also known as an anti-theft code) is a built-in security system integrated into factory car stereos to prevent theft.
This system ensures that a removed radio becomes inoperable without the original code.
Entering the valid code returns full audio and media functionality.
Frequently Asked Questions about Ford C-Max Radio Code
Free codes are uncommon.
You might find the code in the paperwork or from a previous owner, but most require a serial number lookup.
Not all of them require a radio code, but many factory radios use it as an anti-theft feature.
Some series may not require a code depending on the head unit.
Yes. Each stereo has its own unlock code.
A different radio will need its own code to work.
The most common method is to hold preset buttons 1 and 6 at the same time on Ford 6000CD and Sony MP3 radios. For the Ford 4500 RDS, hold buttons 2 and 6 instead.
Not all Ford radios support on-screen serial display. If the button method doesn't work for your model, the serial number is printed on a label on the top or side of the radio unit, which requires physical removal to view. See our full guide for all methods.
The following Ford radio models are able to display the serial number on screen: 6000CD, 6000CD MK2, 4500 RDS E-O-N, Sony MP3, and some Travelpilot navigation units.
Older Ford radios and some models without a digital display lack this capability. In those cases, physical removal is the only way to access the serial number label.
