Situations When your Escort Requests a Code
Many owners encounter radio lock problems on their Escort after power loss.
Below are the most frequent situations when this can happen.
Radio Locked After Battery Swap
When the battery is removed, the Ford Escort radio locks automatically.
This security feature is designed to prevent theft by disabling the radio after power loss.
More Situations Causing This Problem
- After an ECU reset, software update, or electrical repair, some Ford Escort radios display a CODE message.
- If a power circuit is interrupted, the radio can enter anti-theft mode.
- When the head unit is removed, it usually locks automatically.
- After a boost start, the radio may lose power and request a security code.
What is a Escort Radio Code?
The anti-theft PIN is a manufacturer-assigned numeric code that keeps your stereo secure.
It is programmed into the radio at the factory and activates automatically whenever the unit detects a power cut.
Without this code, the radio stays locked and cannot be operated.
Entering the code tells the radio that the owner is present, unlocking all audio functions immediately.
Places to Check Before Paying for a Radio Code
There is a chance your Ford Escort radio code is written down in your documents.
Before spending money, quickly check the places below - it costs nothing to look.
Look for it in the Vehicle Itself
- On the back of the radio if the unit was previously removed.
- In the user guide, often on a separate page.
- Near the trunk lining, where some manufacturers place radio labels.
- In the service booklet provided with the car.
- On a label in the center console.
Can You Get a Ford Escort Radio Code from the Dealership?
Dealerships can generate your radio code by checking the VIN in their system.
They typically require proof of ownership before sharing the unlock code.
This is the official way to restore access to the factory radio.
Drawbacks:
- Dealers frequently bill for the code (It may cost more than 100$).
- You may need to visit the dealer during business hours.
- Some imported or older radios may not be in their database.
- The lookup is often slower and may require waiting.
Finding the S/N on a Escort's Radio
To generate the correct radio code, you will need the radio serial number from your Ford Escort's head unit.
You can usually find it directly on the screen. Common labels to look for: S/N, SN, Serial, Serial Number.
1. Finding Escort's S/N on the Screen
Some Ford radio models are able to show the serial number on screen using button combinations. The method depends on your specific radio model.
Ford 6000CD
- Turn the ignition to ON and power on the radio.
- Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously.
- The display will cycle through several codes – write down the serial number that appears.
- Confirm with button 5 or ENTER if required.
Note: On the 6000CD MK2 variant, use the # button or preset 5 for confirmation.
Ford 4500 RDS E-O-N
- Press and hold preset buttons 2 and 6 simultaneously.
- The serial number will be displayed (format:
M123123). - If button 5 does not confirm, try the TA button instead.
Ford Sony MP3
- Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously.
- The serial number appears on screen (e.g.
SOCD6X8V404077). - Hold the center button for 3 seconds to confirm.
Ford Travelpilot EX / NX / FX
For Ford navigation units:
- Check for a pull-out label on the right side of the radio unit.
- Alternatively, press and hold the SELECT button on the right turn-wheel.
2. The Serial Number on the Radio Housing
The serial number is usually located on a sticker attached to the head unit.
Step 1: Turn off the vehicle.
Step 2: After that, remove the dashboard.
Step 3: Then unscrew the radio brackets.
Step 4: Carefully slide the unit out partially (Be careful not to damage the cables that the unit is connected to).
Step 5: Look for the serial on the side of the unit.
Step 6: Write down the full number carefully and come back to our website so that we can generate your code.
Important: Don't mix the Serial Number and the Part Number!
Removing the Ford Escort Radio
If on-screen display fails, the radio must be removed using Ford radio release keys — thin tools that slide into the rectangular slots on each side of the unit. Once inserted, the clips release and the radio slides forward. The serial label is on the top or side of the housing.

Serial Number Prefixes You'll See on Ford Escort
Your Ford Escort radio serial number starts with M (e.g. M123456) or V (e.g. V123456). Becker TravelPilot units use the BP prefix. The serial is a 7-character code printed on a label on the radio housing.
How to Enter the Unlock Code on Your Vehicle
Once you have the Ford's security code, you can enter it using the radio buttons.
Most radios display "ENTER CODE", "----" or "XXXX" message when they are locked.
You typically use the rotary knob to input the code.
After entering the full code, the radio will unlock automatically.
To input the unlock code on your Ford radio:
- Turn the ignition to ON and power on the radio.
- The display will show "CODE" or "ENTER KEY CODE".
- Use the preset buttons (1–4) to enter each digit of your 4-digit code. Press each button the number of times corresponding to the digit (e.g. press button 1 three times for digit 3).
- After entering all 4 digits, press button 5 or ENTER to confirm.
Tip: On some Ford models (e.g. Sony MP3), you can enter the code directly using the numbered buttons instead of cycling preset buttons.
Ford Escort Radio Code - Frequently Asked Questions
Not all of them require a radio code, but many factory radios use it as an anti-theft feature.
Some production series may still use a code depending on the head unit.
Free codes are not usually available.
You might find the code in the manual or from a service center, but most require a database lookup.
Yes. Each factory radio has its own unlock code.
A used radio will need its own code to work.
The most common method is to hold preset buttons 1 and 6 at the same time on Ford 6000CD and Sony MP3 radios. For the Ford 4500 RDS, hold buttons 2 and 6 instead.
Not all Ford radios support on-screen serial display. If the button method doesn't work for your model, the serial number is printed on a label on the top or side of the radio unit, which requires physical removal to view. See our full guide for all methods.
The following Ford radio models are able to display the serial number on screen: 6000CD, 6000CD MK2, 4500 RDS E-O-N, Sony MP3, and some Travelpilot navigation units.
Older Ford radios and some models without a digital display do not support this feature. In those cases, physical removal is the only way to access the serial number label.
