Searching for the Serial Number on a Commander

The only thing you'll need to retrieve the unlock code is your radio's serial number. No extra vehicle data is required.

On almost all Jeep vehicles, you can find it in one of these places:

  • Visible on the radio screen (occasionally by using a key combination)
  • On the radio body itself - you'll need to remove the unit slightly and write down your serial (which is usually simple)

Search for something like: S/N or Serial.

1. Getting Commander's S/N on the Infotainment

Most Uconnect-equipped vehicles are able to show the radio serial number directly on the screen using a hidden diagnostic menu called Dealer Mode (also known as Engineering Mode). This means you can get the serial number without removing the radio from the dashboard.

Uconnect 8.4" Classic (2013–2018)

Method 1 – Climate Controls:

  1. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON (engine off).
  2. Simultaneously hold the Up, Down, and Front Defrost climate buttons for 5 seconds.
  3. The Dealer Mode menu appears on screen.
  4. Navigate to: System InfoRadio Part InfoSerial Number.

Method 2 – Temperature Buttons:

  1. Hold the Temperature Up (red) and Temperature Down (blue) buttons together for 5 seconds.
  2. The Engineering Menu appears.
  3. Navigate to: System InfoRadio Part InfoSerial Number.

Uconnect 8.4" NEW (2019+) & 12-inch

  1. Turn the ignition to ACC or ON.
  2. Press the bottom-left and bottom-right edges of the physical screen bezel simultaneously until Dealer Mode appears.
  3. Navigate to: System InfoRadio Part InfoSerial Number.

Important Press the physical bezel edges, not the touchscreen surface.

Uconnect 7" (e.g. Jeep Compass)

  1. Hold the Temperature Up and Temperature Down buttons for 5 seconds.
  2. The Engineering Menu appears.
  3. Navigate to: System InfoTarget Main DataSerial Number.
Note: Some 2020+ models may have Dealer Mode restricted after a software update. If none of the above methods work, the radio must be physically removed to view the serial number label on the unit. See our full Uconnect Dealer Mode guide with video tutorials, or our Uconnect radio removal guide for step-by-step instructions.

2. Locating the S/N on the Radio Unit

The serial number is usually found on a label attached to the radio casing.

Step 1: Turn off the car.

Step 2: After that, remove the dashboard trim.

Step 3: Then release the mounting clips.

Step 4: Carefully slide the unit out partially (Be careful not to damage the cables).

Step 5: Look for the serial number on the rear of the unit.

Step 6: Write down the full Serial Number carefully and come back here so that we can generate your code.

Important: Don't mix the Serial Number and the Part Number!

Physical Radio Removal (if Dealer Mode is unavailable)

If the on-screen method is not available on your vehicle, the radio can be physically removed to access the serial number label on the top or side of the unit:

  1. Remove the trim bezel – Carefully pry off the dashboard trim surrounding the radio using a plastic trim removal tool. The bezel is held by friction clips.
  2. Unscrew the mounting bolts – Remove the 4 mounting screws (usually Torx or Phillips) securing the radio to the dash frame.
  3. Slide the unit forward – Gently pull the radio out far enough to see the label. Do not disconnect the wiring harness unless necessary.
  4. Locate the serial number label – Locate a white or silver sticker with a barcode on the top or side of the unit. The serial number is a 14-character alphanumeric code (e.g. T00AM394958584).

For step-by-step guidance with video tutorials for specific vehicles, see our Uconnect radio removal guide.

Common Serial Formats on Jeep Commander Factory Units

To unlock your radio, find the serial starting with T00AM, TM9, or A2C. Important: do NOT use serials ending in W, J, L, or S — those are screen/DVD/amplifier modules, not the main radio brain.

Jeep Commander's Most Common Unlock Code Causes

Your radio may enter anti-theft mode when it detects a power interruption.

These are the most common scenarios that activate the radio code prompt.

Error After a Battery Replacement

After a battery replacement, your radio may stop working.

This happens because the radio loses power, which activates the security lock.

Other Cases When The Radio Asks for a Code

  • Even a brief jump-start can activate the anti-theft system.
  • A power surge can reset the radio and prompt for a code.
  • Replacing the factory stereo with a used one requires the code for that specific unit.
  • Electrical repairs may reset the radio memory on some Jeep Commander units.

Free Things to Try

Looking for a free Jeep Commander Radio Code? Actually, you may already have it.

In few cases, your code may already be available in the vehicle itself or in the documentation.

Checking these sources can save you time and money before using an online lookup tool.

Below are the simplest places to look.

Search the Vehicle Documents

  1. On the head unit casing if the unit was previously removed.
  2. On a label in the glove compartment.
  3. Near the trunk lining, where some manufacturers place radio labels.
  4. In the owner's handbook, often on a separate code card.
  5. In the vehicle documentation provided with the car.

Can You Get a Jeep Commander Radio Code from the Dealership?

Dealerships can retrieve your radio code by checking the VIN in their system.

They typically require proof of ownership before sharing the unlock code.

This is the official way to restore access to the factory radio.

Potential Downsides:

  • You may need to contact service support during business hours.
  • The lookup is often slower and may require waiting.
  • Dealers frequently charge a service fee (It may cost more than 100$).
  • Some imported or older radios may not be in their database.

Why Use Our Jeep Commander Radio Code Generator Service?

Our Jeep Commander radio code lookup service retrieves the security code using the stereo serial.

Compared to dealership VIN lookup, this Jeep Commander radio code generator is faster, doesn't require vehicle documents, and costs less.

It's an easy way to restore access to your factory radio without leaving your home.

Dealer Option vs FindRadioCode

  • Dealerships operate during weekdays, while FindRadioCode is available 24/7.
  • Dealer lookup can take time, while our system delivers codes right away 95% of times.
  • Dealer services often charge over $100, while FindRadioCode offers codes from 9.99 USD.
  • Some dealers require visiting the service center and showing documents, while FindRadioCode is fully online.
  • Dealer lookups often come with limited refunds, while FindRadioCode offers a full money-back policy.

You've Got the Security Code. How the Entering Process Works?

With your code ready, it's time to enter it into the Jeep Commander's radio.

The locked radio will usually show a blank screen with dashes.

Use the preset number buttons to dial in each digit, then confirm to unlock the head unit.

To input the unlock code on your Uconnect radio:

  1. When the radio is locked, the screen will display "ENTER CODE" or show four dashes (----).
  2. Use the on-screen keypad (touchscreen models) or the preset buttons (non-touchscreen models) to enter each digit of your 4-digit code.
  3. After entering all 4 digits, the radio will unlock automatically – no need to press a confirm button.

Tip: Ensure you enter the code carefully. Three incorrect attempts will trigger a temporary lockout.

Lockout Warning: Uconnect radios permit 3 incorrect code attempts before triggering a lockout timer. During lockout, the screen may display "WAIT" or go blank. You must leave the ignition in the ON position for approximately 60 minutes to clear the lockout. Do not turn off the ignition during the lockout period, as this will restart the timer. After the lockout period, you get 3 more attempts.

What is a Commander Radio Code?

A radio unlock code, also known as an anti-theft code is a unique numeric unlock key that unlocks your factory radio after it has been locked.

This security code is triggered when the radio loses power.

Automakers include this feature to protect factory stereos from theft.

If power is interrupted, the radio stops functioning and asks for the CODE before it can function normally.

Once the right combination is entered, the stereo is fully reactivated.

Frequently Asked Questions about Jeep Commander Radio Code

Free codes are rare.

You might already possess the code in the owner's booklet or from a dealer, but most require a paid retrieval.

Yes. Each head unit has its own unique security code.

A second-hand radio will need its own code to work.

Not all of them require a radio code, but many factory radios use it as an security measure.

Some series may not require a code depending on the radio unit.

Uconnect is the infotainment system developed by Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and used across Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo vehicles. Most Uconnect radios include an anti-theft protection system that activates whenever the radio loses power – for example after a battery replacement, a dead battery, or electrical work.

When triggered, the radio displays "ENTER CODE" and will not function until the correct 4-digit unlock code is entered. The code is permanently tied to the radio's serial number, not the vehicle's VIN, which is why finding the serial number is the first step to unlocking.

Yes, in most cases. Uconnect systems from 2013 onwards feature a hidden Dealer Mode (or Engineering Mode) diagnostic menu that shows the serial number directly on screen. You can access it by holding specific button combinations – without any tools or removal.

However, some 2020+ models may have had Dealer Mode disabled via software updates. If you can't reach the on-screen menu, the radio must be physically removed to read the serial number label on the unit. See our full Dealer Mode guide for step-by-step instructions with video tutorials.

Yes. The Wrangler JK (2007–2018) uses older Uconnect models (430/430N/730N) with physical preset buttons, while the Wrangler JL (2018+) uses the newer Uconnect 4C with an 8.4" or 7" touchscreen. Both generations require a radio code after power loss, but the method for accessing Dealer Mode differs.

For the JK, use the climate control button method. For the JL, try the screen bezel edge method (8.4") or the temperature button method (7"). See our Uconnect Dealer Mode guide for specific instructions.
