Finding the Serial Number on a Wrangler

The only thing you'll need to get the code is your radio's serial number. VIN or other details are not required.

On almost all Jeep vehicles, you can find it in these common spots:

  • Shown on the radio screen (sometimes by using specific button presses)
  • On the radio unit itself - you'll need to pull it out and write down serial (which is fairly easy)

Search for text similar to: Serial Number or SN.

1. How to See the Serial Number on the Wrangler Screen

The generation split is the main story for the Jeep Wrangler. JK and JL are fundamentally different vehicles with different radio systems — the method that works on one will not work on the other.

JK Wrangler (2007–2018) — Physical Removal Required

The JK used Uconnect 430N or 730N with physical preset buttons — no touchscreen, no Dealer Mode. Whether you're a daily driver or have the Wrangler as a trail rig, knowing this matters: if your battery disconnects on a trail, you'll need to remove the radio to read the serial label once you get home.

The serial number is on a label on the radio chassis. Pull the unit out and look at the top or side. See the removal guide below for JK-specific steps and videos.

JL Wrangler (2018+) — Tech Upgrade: On-Screen Methods Available

The JL brought a proper modern infotainment system. If your JL has the Uconnect 7": hold Temp Up + Temp Down for 5 seconds. The Engineering Menu opens. Navigate: System InfoTarget Main DataSerial Number.

If your JL has the Uconnect 8.4" NEW: press the bottom-left + bottom-right edges of the plastic bezel frame simultaneously until Dealer Mode opens. Navigate: System InfoRadio Part InfoSerial Number.

Note After 2020 software updates, some JL units have Dealer Mode restricted. If that's your situation, the physical removal method is the fallback.

Serial format: 14 characters, e.g. T00AM394958584.

2. Finding the Serial Number on the Radio Body

To find the serial number, you'll need to pull out the head unit from the dashboard.

  1. Start by turning off the vehicle and taking off the dashboard bezel.
  2. Next, release the clips and pull the unit forward to check the label on the side of the radio. Be careful not to damage the cables.
  3. Write down full serial number precisely and then come back to our website.
  4. Know that serial number and part number are not the same. You can find both of them on the unit, and you only need for the serial.

Physical Radio Removal (if Dealer Mode is unavailable)

If the on-screen method is not available on your vehicle, the radio can be physically removed to view the serial number label on the top, side, or back of the unit:

  1. Remove the trim bezel – Gently remove the dashboard trim surrounding the radio using a plastic trim removal tool. The bezel is held by friction clips.
  2. Unscrew the mounting bolts – Remove the 4 mounting screws (usually Torx or Phillips) securing the radio to the dash frame.
  3. Slide the unit forward – Gently pull the radio out far enough to see the label. Do not disconnect the wiring harness unless necessary.
  4. Locate the serial number label – Look for a white or silver sticker with a barcode on the top or side of the unit. The serial number is a 14-character alphanumeric code (e.g. T00AM394958584).

For step-by-step guidance with video tutorials for specific vehicles, see our Uconnect radio removal guide.

Serial Number Formats You'll See on Jeep Wrangler

The radio uses serials starting with T00AM (14 chars), TM9, or A2C (newer Uconnect). The serial label is on the body of the radio unit.

Situations When your Wrangler Requests a Code

Many drivers encounter security code prompts on their Wrangler after battery-related issues.

Below are the most frequent situations when this can occur.

Radio Asking for Code After Battery Replacement

When the battery is disconnected, the Jeep Wrangler radio locks automatically.

This security feature is designed to protect the original head unit by disabling the radio after power loss.

More Events That Can Lock Your Wrangler's Radio

  • Replacing the factory stereo with a used one requires the code for that particular radio.
  • A blown fuse can reset the radio and prompt for a code.
  • Even a quick battery boost can activate the anti-theft lock.
  • ECU reflashing may trigger the anti-theft mode on some Jeep Wrangler units.

Quick Fixes Before Paying for a Radio Code

Looking for a free Jeep Wrangler Radio Code? Actually, you may find it.

In some cases, your code may already be available in the vehicle itself or in the documentation.

Checking these sources can save you time and money before using an online generator.

Below are the simplest places to look.

Check Inside the Car

  1. In the owner's handbook, often on a separate page.
  2. On the radio chassis if the unit was previously removed.
  3. In the maintenance records provided with the car.
  4. On a label in the center console.
  5. Near the boot panel, where some manufacturers place radio labels.

Can You Get a Jeep Wrangler Radio Code from the Dealership?

A Jeep dealer can usually look up the radio code using your Wrangler's vehicle identification number.

In most cases, you need to contact the service department or visit the dealership and show vehicle documents.

Once verified, they can request the original anti-theft code for your radio.

Downsides:

  • You usually need to visit in person and bring vehicle paperwork.
  • The process can take days depending on the model and database.
  • Dealers often ask for payment for the lookup service and it can cost more than 100$.
  • Some older Jeep Wrangler radios may require manual lookup.

How to Enter the Anti-Theft Code on the Vehicle

With your code ready, it's time to enter it into the Jeep Wrangler's radio.

The locked radio will usually show a blank screen with dashes.

Use the preset number buttons to dial in each digit, then confirm to activate the head unit.

Step-by-Step Code Entry Instructions

To enter the unlock code on your Jeep Uconnect radio:

  1. Turn the ignition to the ON or ACC position (engine off is fine).
  2. The radio screen will display "ENTER CODE" or show four dashes (----).
  3. For touchscreen models (Uconnect 8.4" or 7" with touchscreen):
    • Use the on-screen keypad to tap each digit of your 4-digit code.
    • The code will appear on screen as you enter it.
  4. For button models (older Uconnect 430/730 systems):
    • Use the preset buttons (1-4) to enter the code.
    • Press button 1 repeatedly for the first digit (e.g., press 5 times for digit "5").
    • Press button 2 repeatedly for the second digit.
    • Press button 3 repeatedly for the third digit.
    • Press button 4 repeatedly for the fourth digit.
    • Press and hold the Enter button (usually the round center button) for several seconds to confirm.
  5. After entering all 4 digits correctly, the radio unlocks and should function normally.

Important Tip: Make sure you enter the code carefully. Three incorrect attempts will trigger a temporary lockout (see warning below).

Lockout Warning: Uconnect radios allow 3 incorrect code attempts before triggering a lockout timer. During lockout, the screen may display "WAIT" or go blank. You need to leave the ignition in the ON position for approximately 60 minutes to clear the lockout. Do not turn off the ignition during the lockout period, as this will restart the timer. After the lockout period, you get 3 more attempts.

Wrangler's Radio Code FAQs

Not all of them require a radio code, but many factory radios use it as an security measure.

Certain series may not require a code depending on the radio unit.

Free codes are rare.

You might already possess the code in the paperwork or from a previous owner, but most require a database lookup.

Yes. Each head unit has its own radio code.

A different radio will need its original code to work.

Uconnect is the infotainment system developed by Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) and used across Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, Fiat, and Alfa Romeo vehicles. Most Uconnect radios feature an anti-theft protection system that activates whenever the radio loses power – for example after a battery replacement, a dead battery, or electrical work.

When triggered, the radio displays "ENTER CODE" and will not function until the correct 4-digit unlock code is entered. The code is permanently tied to the radio's serial number, not the vehicle's VIN, which is why finding the serial number is the first step to unlocking.

Yes, for most vehicles. Uconnect systems from 2013 onwards include a hidden Dealer Mode (or Engineering Mode) diagnostic menu that shows the serial number right on the display. You can access it by holding specific button combinations – without any tools or removal.

However, some 2020+ models may have had Dealer Mode disabled via software updates. If you cannot access the on-screen menu, the radio must be physically removed to read the serial number label on the unit. See our full Dealer Mode guide for step-by-step instructions with video tutorials.

Yes. The Wrangler JK (2007–2018) uses older Uconnect models (430/430N/730N) with physical preset buttons, while the Wrangler JL (2018+) uses the newer Uconnect 4C with an 8.4" or 7" touchscreen. Both generations require a radio code after power loss, but the method for accessing Dealer Mode is different.

For the JK, use the climate control button method. For the JL, try the screen bezel edge method (8.4") or the temperature button method (7"). See our Uconnect Dealer Mode guide for specific instructions.

Jeep Wrangler Radio Code — JK & JL

Everything explained on this page applies to all Jeep Wrangler generations covered here: JK (2007–2018) and JL (2018–2024). The radio unlock process — finding the serial number, submitting it, and entering the 4-digit anti-theft code — is the same across both generations. The main difference between generations is the Uconnect head unit fitted and how the code is entered.

Whether your Wrangler's radio displays "LOCKED", "CODE", or a code entry screen after a battery disconnect, the steps are identical regardless of the generation. Enter your serial number in the form above and you'll receive the correct code for your specific unit.

Wrangler Generation Guide

Wrangler JK (2007–2018)

The JK Wrangler was equipped with Chrysler's Uconnect 130 or Uconnect 430 head unit depending on trim level. The serial number follows a TQN#### or T00BE#### format and is printed on the label on the side of the unit, accessed by removing it from the dashboard. On some units, the serial can also be found in the radio's diagnostic or system info screen.

Code entry on the JK is done using the physical preset buttons — press button 1, 2, 3, or 4 repeatedly to increment that digit. On touchscreen Uconnect models, tap each digit on screen. Once all four digits are entered correctly, press and hold AM/FM or confirm to unlock.

Wrangler JL (2018–2024)

The JL Wrangler features Chrysler's modern Uconnect 7.0" or Uconnect 8.4" touchscreen infotainment system. The serial number follows a TM9#### or T00BE#### format and is typically displayed on the touchscreen itself — navigate to Settings > System Information or look for the serial number display when the unit prompts for a code entry.

Code entry on the JL is done entirely via the touchscreen — tap each digit of the 4-digit code on the keypad displayed on screen, then tap confirm or OK. The radio will unlock immediately if the code is correct.
