Radio Code Explained
A factory radio code, sometimes also known as an anti-theft code is a numeric security code that unlocks your factory radio after it has been disabled.
This factory security PIN is triggered when the radio is disconnected from power.
Automakers include this feature to protect factory stereos from theft.
If power is lost, the radio stops functioning and asks for the CODE before it can work again.
Once the right combination is entered, the stereo is unlocked.
Common Acura ILX Radio Code Problems
Many drivers encounter security code prompts on their ILX after battery-related issues.
Below are the most common situations when this can occur.
Radio Asking for Code After Battery Change
A dead battery is the most common reason a Acura ILX radio asks for a code.
Even a momentary voltage drop is enough to activate the built-in anti-theft lock.
More Situations Causing This Issue
- A fuse removal can cause the Acura ILX radio to lock.
- Jump-starting the vehicle can trigger anti-theft mode, requiring the PIN.
- Installing a replacement head unit will trigger the original anti-theft code.
- After an ECU or software reset, the radio may enter security mode.
What You Might Try First
Before you decide to pay, you should check a few places where the code is often already written down.
Some owners find their Acura ILX radio code without needing any tools or paperwork.
Here are the easiest things to check first.
Check the Vehicle Itself
- In the vehicle handbook, often on a sticker page.
- Inside the center console, sometimes on a label.
- On the radio unit itself, if it was serviced earlier.
- In your service book from the previous owner.
- In the trunk, on a radio label.
Can You Get a Acura ILX Radio Code from the Dealer?
Dealerships can generate your radio code by checking the VIN in their system.
They typically ask for registration and ID before sharing the unlock code.
This is the official way to restore access to the factory radio.
Disadvantages:
- Dealers frequently bill for the code (sometimes more than 100$).
- The lookup is often slower and may require waiting.
- Some imported or older radios may not be in their database.
- You may need to visit the dealer during business hours.
How to Find the S/N on a ILX's Radio
To generate the correct unlock code, you will need the radio serial number from your Acura ILX's radio unit.
You can usually find it directly on the screen. Common labels to look for: S/N, SN, Serial, Serial Number.
1. Get the S/N from Acura ILX's Screen
Accessing the Serial Number in Acura ILX
The Acura ILX (2013–2022) is Acura's compact luxury sedan, built on the Honda Civic platform. It uses Honda's standard radio system, which allows you to display the serial number on screen without removing the unit.
Display Method:
- Turn the ignition ON.
- If the radio shows "CODE", turn the radio OFF.
- Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously.
- While holding both buttons, turn the radio ON.
- The serial number appears as
U#### L####format.
Generation-Specific Notes:
- 2013–2015 ILX (1st Gen) – Available with either a standard radio or Technology Package with navigation. Both support the 1+6 button method. Navigation models can also access the serial via the diagnostic menu.
- 2016–2022 ILX (1st Gen Facelift) – Features a dual-screen setup on Premium and Technology packages. The 1+6 method works on all trim levels. The 8-inch On Demand Multi-Use Display (ODMD) does not affect the serial display method.
Note: The ILX shares its radio architecture with the Honda Civic of the same era, so procedures are the same.
2. Locating the Serial on the Radio Body
The serial number is usually printed on a sticker attached to the head unit.
Step 1: Turn off the the ignition.
Step 2: After that, remove the dashboard.
Step 3: Then unscrew the radio brackets.
Step 4: Carefully pull the radio forward partially (Be careful not to damage the cables that the unit is connected to).
Step 5: Look for the serial number on the rear of the unit.
Step 6: Write down the full Serial Number carefully and come back to our website so that we can generate the code.
Important: Don't mix the Serial Number for the Part Number!
Alternative: Removing the Acura Radio
When on-screen retrieval isn't available, physically remove the radio by popping off the trim surround. The serial label is on the radio housing itself.

Serial Number Prefixes You'll See on Acura ILX
To unlock your radio, find the serial in U####L#### format. Navigation units show GNA or HBM prefixes. This serial is necessary for generating the correct unlock code.
How to Enter the Radio Code on Acura ILX
You need to enter the code into the system to unlock your Acura's radio.
When the unit is locked, the screen usually shows a code prompt.
You should use control knob, touchscreen, or radio presets to enter the numbers, then confirm the code to reactivate the audio system.
To input your Acura ILX unlock code:
- Turn the ignition ON – The radio displays "CODE".
- Use preset buttons 1 through 5 to enter your 5-digit code. Each button press cycles the digit for that position.
- Confirm by pressing and holding button 6 for 2–5 seconds.
Dual-Screen Models: If your ILX has the 8-inch ODMD upper screen, the code entry still happens through the lower radio display using the preset buttons.
Lockout Warning: After 3 incorrect attempts, the radio locks for 1 hour. Keep the ignition ON during the wait – turning it off resets the timer.
Acura ILX Radio Code - FAQ
Yes. Each factory radio has its own unique security code.
A used radio will need its own code to work.
Free codes are uncommon.
You might already possess the code in the owner's booklet or from a dealer, but most require a database lookup.
Not all of them require a radio code, but many factory radios use it as an security measure.
Certain production series may still use a code depending on the radio unit.
For most Honda radios: turn the ignition ON, turn the radio OFF, then hold preset buttons 1 and 6 while turning the radio back ON. The serial number will appear on the display as a complete number or in two parts (U#### and L####).
For navigation-equipped models (2008–2019), press and hold CANCEL + MAP + MENU simultaneously to access the diagnostic menu, then navigate to Detail Information → Unit Check → ECU Information. See our full Honda serial number guide for all methods.
Honda and Acura radio codes are 5 digits long, using only digits 1 through 6 (no zeros, sevens, eights, or nines). This is unlike most other manufacturers that use 4-digit codes.
You enter the code using the preset buttons 1–5 on the radio. Each button press corresponds to one digit of the code.
