Common Acura TLX Radio Code Problems

Many drivers encounter security code prompts on their TLX after electrical work.

Below are the most common situations when this can occur.

Error After a Battery Replacement

When the battery is disconnected, the Acura TLX radio enters anti-theft mode.

This security feature is designed to prevent theft by disabling the radio after electrical reset.

Other Situations That May Trigger the Code

  • When the head unit is replaced, it usually requires the original code.
  • After a jump-start, the radio may lose power and request a radio code.
  • If a power circuit is interrupted, the radio can lock itself.
  • After a software update, electrical repair, or an ECU reset, some Acura TLX radios display a CODE message.

Quick Fixes Before Paying for a Radio Code

There is a chance your Acura TLX radio code is already somewhere in your car.

Before using a paid service, quickly check the places below - you might be surprised.

Search the Vehicle Documents

  1. In the boot compartment, on a radio label.
  2. In the radio manual, often on a sticker page.
  3. On the radio unit itself, if it was removed before.
  4. Inside the glovebox, sometimes on a small card.
  5. In your maintenance booklet from the previous owner.

Dealer Retrieval Process

Dealerships can retrieve your radio code by checking the vehicle records in their system.

They typically ask for registration and ID before sharing the unlock code.

This is the official way to restore access to the factory radio.

Things to Consider:

  • You may need to contact service support during business hours.
  • The lookup is often slower and may require waiting.
  • Some imported or older radios may need extra verification.
  • Dealers frequently bill for the code (sometimes more than 100$).

Finding the Serial N. on a TLX's Radio

To get the correct unlock code, you first need the serial number from the radio.

Depending on your radio model, you can find it shown on the display or find it on the radio unit itself.

You may see labels such as: Serial Num. / S/N / Serial Number etc.

These are the most common ways to locate it:

1. How to See the Serial Number on the TLX Screen

Accessing the Serial Number in Acura TLX

The Acura TLX, produced from 2015 to present, uses Honda's proven serial display system. You can access the serial number right on the display without removing the radio — a quick button combination is all it takes.

Display Method (Works on Most TLX Models):

  1. Turn the ignition ON (engine off is fine).
  2. If the radio shows "CODE", turn the radio OFF.
  3. Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously for 2–5 seconds.
  4. While holding both buttons, turn the radio ON.
  5. The display will show the serial number – either as a complete 8-digit number or in two parts: U#### then L####.

Generation-Specific Notes:

  • 2015–2020 TLX (1st Gen) – All trim levels (Base, Technology, A-Spec, Advance) use the standard 1+6 button method. Models with navigation may also display the serial via CANCEL + MAP + MENU → Detail Information → ECU Information.
  • 2021–2025 TLX (2nd Gen) – The True Touchpad Interface infotainment may store the serial in Settings → System → About. Try this first before using the button combination.

Physical Removal: If the button method doesn't work, you can physically remove the radio to find the serial number label on the chassis. This is rarely needed on the TLX.

2. Locating your Serial Number on the Radio Unit

The serial number is usually found on a label attached to the radio casing.

Step 1: Turn off the the ignition.

Step 2: After that, take off the surrounding panel.

Step 3: Then unscrew the radio brackets.

Step 4: Carefully pull the radio forward partially (Be careful not to damage the connections).

Step 5: Look for the serial number on the side of the unit.

Step 6: Write down the full number carefully and come back to our website so that we can generate the code.

Important: Be careful not to mix the Serial Number and the Part Number!

Alternative: Removing the Acura Radio

When on-screen retrieval isn't available, physically remove the radio by popping off the trim surround. The serial label is on the radio housing itself.

Common Acura TLX Serial Number Formats

The radio uses a serial number in U####L#### format (e.g. U3456 L7890). Acura shares this format with Honda. Navigation systems display a GNA or HBM prefix.

How to Enter the Radio Code on Your Vehicle

Once you have the Acura's unlock code, you can type it in using the radio buttons.

Most radios display "ENTER CODE", "----" or "XXXX" message when they are locked.

You typically use the preset buttons to select each digit.

After entering the full code, the radio will restore normal operation.

To enter your Acura TLX unlock code:

  1. Turn the ignition ON – The radio displays "CODE" or "Enter Code".
  2. Use preset buttons 1 through 5 to enter each digit of your 5-digit code. Each button press cycles through digits:
    • Button 1 = first digit
    • Button 2 = second digit
    • Button 3 = third digit
    • Button 4 = fourth digit
    • Button 5 = fifth digit
  3. Confirm by pressing and holding preset button 6 for 2–5 seconds. The radio will unlock and resumes normal operation.

For 2021+ TLX Touchscreen: If your TLX has the True Touchpad Interface, an on-screen numeric keypad may appear instead. Tap each digit and press "Enter" to confirm.

Lockout Warning: After 3 incorrect attempts, the radio locks for 1 hour. Keep the ignition ON during the wait – turning it off resets the timer.

Lockout Warning: Honda radios allow a limited number of incorrect code attempts (usually 5–10) before entering a timed lockout. When locked out, the display will show "ERR" or "ERROR". To reset, disconnect the radio from power (pull the radio fuse or disconnect the battery) for at least 10 minutes, then reconnect. This clears the lockout, but the radio will still require the correct code.

Frequent Questions about Acura TLX Code

Yes. Each head unit has its own unique security code.

A second-hand radio will need its original code to work.

Not all of them require a radio code, but many factory radios use it as an security measure.

Some production series may still use a code depending on the head unit.

Free codes are uncommon.

You might locate the code in the paperwork or from a service center, but most require a paid retrieval.

For most Honda radios: turn the ignition ON, turn the radio OFF, then hold preset buttons 1 and 6 while turning the radio back ON. The serial number will appear on the screen as a complete number or in two parts (U#### and L####).

For navigation-equipped models (2008–2019), press and hold CANCEL + MAP + MENU simultaneously to access the diagnostic menu, then navigate to Detail Information → Unit Check → ECU Information. See our full Honda serial number guide for all methods.

Honda and Acura radio codes are 5 digits long, using only digits 1 through 6 (no zeros, sevens, eights, or nines). This is different from most other manufacturers that use 4-digit codes.

You enter the code using the preset buttons 1–5 on the radio. Each button press corresponds to one digit of the code.
