How can I find the code for my Philips radio?

If you have not lost the Philips code yet, check these places first - many vehicles ship with the code written down somewhere in the car.

  • Glovebox - Many manufacturers ship a small sticker labelled "Anti-theft unlock code" inside the glovebox door or top panel.
  • Owner's manual - Often handwritten on the inside cover or stapled to the page covering the radio.
  • Code card - A small slip of paper inside the original purchase pack - sometimes inside the radio sleeve itself.
  • Service records - Dealers sometimes write the Philips radio code into the maintenance log after a battery service.
  • Old paperwork - Previous owners often leave the code in the document folder, especially on second-hand cars.
  • Dealer paperwork - The original window-sticker pack or sales folder sometimes lists the radio code.

How to Find the Serial Number on Your Philips Radio

By Removing the Radio Unit (Most Common Method)

On most OEM and retail units, the serial number is printed on a physical label attached to the upper section of the radio unit casing.

To access it, you'll usually need to extract the head unit using removal tools. Depending on the vehicle and radio model, this may require plastic trim tools:

  • The serial is normally printed near a barcode or QR identification label
  • The serial typically contains letters and digits with manufacturer-specific prefixes such as "BP" (Blaupunkt), "M" / "V" (Ford/Visteon), "BE" (Becker), or "CL" (Clarion)
  • Do not confuse the serial number with the model or part number

On the Radio Display (No Removal Needed)

Some newer infotainment systems and specific factory units allow the serial number to be displayed directly on-screen using a hidden service menu or a specific button combination.

Philips-specific: Philips factory cassette decks and CD players from the 80s-90s do not have an on-screen service menu - the serial is only visible on the chassis label after physically removing the radio. Later Philips Renault Carminat navigation units (2003+) do show the serial during boot before the CODE prompt.

  • Try holding preset keys 2 + 6 while switching the radio on
  • The serial may briefly appear on the display
  • The display method depends on the radio model

This feature is only available on selected digital and factory-integrated models. If nothing appears after trying the button combinations, you'll need to physically remove the radio and check the metal casing label manually.

About Philips Radios

Philips Car Audio (Royal Philips Electronics) was one of the dominant European factory-radio suppliers from the 1980s through the early 2000s, with the famous PSC code algorithm used on cassette decks and CD players across multiple car brands. Philips shipped factory radios to Renault, Lancia, Ford, Opel/GM, Audi, VW and Volvo - each brand getting its own prefix family (GM, AU, V0/VO, VW, BP) on the same Philips chassis hardware. The brand exited car audio when TPV took over and most Philips units in service today are pre-2005 production.

Philips radios have been installed in millions of vehicles worldwide.

Depending on the production year and vehicle model, these radios may appear under different brand names while sharing the same underlying hardware.

Each Philips unit can usually be identified by a unique combination of letters, numbers, and production prefixes.

Most serial numbers contain a mix of letters and digits and may vary in length depending on the radio generation.

Some Philips radios allow the serial number to be displayed directly on-screen.

In most cases, the serial number can be found on a sticker located on the top, side, or rear of the radio.

To ensure an accurate radio code lookup, always enter the complete serial number exactly as shown.

Radios with the same design may still require different unlock codes if they were produced under different platforms or serial ranges.

How to Enter the Security Code

After receiving the correct unlock code, the activation process is usually quick and straightforward.

When the anti-theft system is active, the radio will lock out all audio features and ask for the unlock code immediately.

The Code Input Process Explained:

Depending on your specific Philips unit interface, use the preset buttons, touchscreen keypad, or numbered controls to select the correct numbers one by one:

  • For radios with a standard 1-6 preset button row: Many classic radios do not let you type numbers directly if the code contains digits higher than 6 (like 7, 8, or 9). Instead, you must press a single preset button repeatedly to cycle through digits. Press button 1 multiple times to change the first character, button 2 for the second character, button 3 for the third, and button 4 for the fourth.
  • For touchscreen or full-keypad models: Type the security numbers exactly as they appear in your delivery email using the integrated dashboard keypad.

⚠️ Avoid Repeated Wrong Entry Attempts:

Repeated failed entries can permanently lock the anti-theft security system, rendering the hardware useless..

Some systems lock out input options for 30 to 60 minutes, during which the vehicle ignition and radio power must remain continuously switched ON to let the timer count down.

If the radio display remains locked or frozen after entering the code, we can help troubleshoot the issue layout safely.

Common Car Brands That Use Philips Radio

Philips was the cross-brand factory-radio supplier of the 80s-90s. The PSC algorithm covers Renault (Carminat, R-pre-2005), Lancia (Ypsilon, Delta), Ford (older RDS units), Volvo (HU pre-2005), Opel / Vauxhall (GM-prefix), Audi (concert / symphony), VW (gamma), Seat and Skoda. The chassis hardware was shared - only the firmware and brand-prefix differed.

Philips radios are found in a wide range of vehicles.

Philips Serial Number Examples

Different radio manufacturers use different serial number formats.

Below are some common examples found on Philips radios:

  • Many serials begin with manufacturer-specific prefixes
  • The S/N usually contains a mix of letters and numbers
  • Some radios display the serial directly on-screen
  • Classic units often require radio removal to access the serial sticker

Philips prefix patterns

  • GM - Philips Opel / Vauxhall (GM) factory units
  • AU - Philips Audi (concert / symphony series)
  • V0 - Philips Volvo (HU series)
  • VO - Philips Volvo alternative prefix - same algorithm as V0
  • VW - Philips VW (gamma series)
  • SE - Philips Seat (older units)
  • SK - Philips Skoda (older units)

Real Philips serial examples

  • GM02051234
  • AU0192745
  • V0123456
  • VW0008245

Philips serials are typically 8-10 characters: 2-letter brand prefix followed by 6-8 digits. The "DP" or "DBM" marking on the label is a chassis design code - submit the PSC serial line, not the DP line.

The exact format varies depending on the radio manufacturer and vehicle brand. Always enter the full serial exactly as shown on the label or display.
