Can't Find Your Radio Serial Number? Follow These Steps for Honda Element 2008
The starting step is finding the radio serial.
Many drivers assume the code depends on the Honda model or year, but in reality, the unlock process depends on the unique radio's serial number.
The serial is the key used to calculate the correct unlock code.
This is actually better, because if you have bought an aftermarket radio, the VIN or other Honda-specific data wouldn't be of much use.
Depending on the radio version used, you may be able to see the serial directly from the screen or by checking the label on the radio chassis.
2008 Honda Element factory audio systems
- LX trim: AM/FM single-disc CD with four speakers and no steering-wheel audio controls - the entry head and the most common to ask for a code after a battery change.
- EX trim: AM/FM/CD with MP3/WMA-capable display, six-speaker layout including two dashboard tweeters, and factory steering-wheel audio controls.
- SC trim: 270 W amplified system with seven speakers including a centre-dash 6.5-inch subwoofer, MP3 jack, XM Satellite Radio compatibility and USB connectivity on later builds.
- Optional 6-disc cartridge changer: still offered as a dealer accessory; when fitted, preset buttons 5 and 6 act as disc - and + on the factory head.
- No factory navigation: Honda did not offer a factory Nav system on the 2008 Element - that option arrived only with the 2009 facelift.
All four configurations are protected by Honda's anti-theft code lockout and use the same 8-character U/L serial format described in the serial block below.
Accessing the Serial Number Through the Radio Menu
Try the following for your 2008 Honda Element:
The 2008 Honda Element features a Honda OEM radio shared with the Civic of the same years. Retrieve the serial using the preset button method:
- Turn ignition to ON. Radio shows "CODE".
- Hold down buttons 1 and 6 together for 3-5 seconds.
- The serial shows in two parts (e.g.,
U3210+L0482).
Tip: The Element's distinctive dashboard layout places the radio higher than most Hondas, making the preset buttons convenient to press.
How to display the radio serial on a 2008 Element
- Sit in the driver's seat with the doors closed and turn the ignition to ACC or ON - the engine does not need to be running.
- If the radio is on, switch it off at the power button.
- Press and hold radio preset 1 and preset 6 together with one hand.
- While still holding both buttons, press the power button to turn the radio back on.
- Continue holding for two to three seconds until the display alternates between a
U-line and anL-line. - Write down the four characters after
Ufirst, then the four afterL; the combined 8-character string is the radio serial Honda needs. - The procedure is identical on LX, EX and SC heads; cars with the optional cartridge changer still report the serial from the head unit, not the changer.
Access the Serial by Pulling Out the Radio
If the serial does not appear on display, the next step is checking the radio itself.
Many Honda radios require physical access to the serial tag attached to the unit.
Usual approach:
- Start by completely powering down the engine - pull the key out.
- Then detach the trim panel.
- Next, release the mounting points and slide the radio forward.
- Look for a barcode label showing the serial number.
To extract the radio in the 2008 Honda Element:
- Power down the vehicle.
- Pry off the radio surround. The Element has a unique dash layout with wider trim pieces secured with clips.
- Remove the four Phillips screws securing the radio.
- Pull the radio forward and find the serial label on the casing.
Element Tip: The Element's open center console design makes radio removal more straightforward than in many other Honda models.
Removing the factory radio on a 2008 Element
- Disconnect the negative battery cable at the under-hood terminal and wait at least three minutes for the SRS capacitor to discharge before reaching behind the dash.
- Have the matching 5-digit unlock code ready - the radio will demand it as soon as power returns.
- Use a plastic panel tool to avoid marking the dash plastics; a cloth-wrapped flat screwdriver is an acceptable fallback if no plastic tool is available.
- Insert the tool into the small slots above the three centre instrument dials and pry the U-shaped radio bezel outward to release its clips, then tug at the upper corners to free it completely.
- Remove the four Phillips screws exposed at the corners of the radio chassis.
- Slide the head unit straight back and disconnect the antenna lead and multi-pin power/audio harness; on SC-trim cars also unplug the centre-dash subwoofer/amp connector, and on cars with the optional cartridge changer disconnect its data ribbon as well.

Standard Serial Number Patterns on This Radio
The 2008 Honda Element radio serial follows standard Honda formats:
U1234L5678– Standard Honda OEM format913A####– Certain Alpine-made units
The Element shares the same radio hardware as other Honda models of its generation. The serial is 8-10 characters and appears on the sticker or via the preset button method.
Reminder Don't confuse the part number (39100-SCV-...) with the serial number.
2008 Element radio serial format
- The display shows the serial as two lines, U then L, four characters each.
- The
UandLletters are positional markers indicating the upper and lower halves and are not part of the serial that you submit. - The serial submitted to Honda is the 8 alphanumeric characters that follow the U and L, in that order.
- Mixed digits and capital letters are valid - for example a 2008 SC head might display
U8N45 L6P78, recorded as8N456P78. - Honda's owner portal validates the 8-character serial against the 17-digit VIN, so both must match the registered owner record before the matching 5-digit unlock code is released.
How the Code Retrieval Process Works for Honda Element 2008
Getting your radio code takes only a few simple steps.
- Find your radio's serial - this is the only information required to generate the correct unlock code.
Unlike dealership lookup, no VIN is needed. - When you've found the S/N, type it into the form above.
The system checks it against a database of supported radios and automatically catches the matching anti-theft code. - In most cases, the code will appear instantly on the screen after you pay and is also sent to your email for backup.
If manual verification is required (rare situations), you'll be notified before checkout. - Once you get it, simply enter it into the radio to restore the functionality.
Got the Code? Here's How to Enter It
Once you have the serial number and retrieved the unlock code, the final part is entering it into your radio.
Honda OEM units display a ENTER CODE message when ready for input.
The process is simple, but button layouts and confirmation methods may differ slightly depending on the radio version installed in your Element.
Step-by-Step Code Input Guide
To input the code on the 2008 Honda Element:
- Ignition ON. Radio shows "CODE".
- Press buttons 1-5 to enter each digit of the 5-digit code.
- Hold button 6 for a few seconds to confirm.
Lockout: 3 wrong attempts = 1 hour lockout. Keep ignition ON.
Entering the unlock code on a 2008 Element
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON and confirm the radio displays
CODE. - Enter the 5-digit code using preset buttons 1 through 6 - Honda codes only contain the digits 1-6.
- On the 2008 LX, EX and SC heads the code is accepted automatically after the fifth digit; no separate confirm press is required.
- You have up to 10 attempts before the radio locks and shows
EorErr. - If locked, leave the key in ON with the radio powered on for one full hour, then enter the correct code - the lockout timer does not reset by simply turning the key off and back on.
Understanding Unlock Issues with Your Element
When the head unit comes on but never displays "CODE":
- It's possible the unit is in an unlocked state — try normal use first.
- Some early Element radios show "CODE E" instead of "CODE" — either indicate the radio is locked and the same entry method applies.
- If the screen is completely dark, verify the radio fuse under the dashboard — a failed fuse will prevent the unit from powering on.
The Element's distinctive dashboard design positions the radio high and centrally, so the screen is usually easy to read — if it is not lighting up, power loss is the likely culprit.
The Element radio serial uses the standard Honda two-part format:
U####L####— 10 characters total; the first half starts withU, the second withL.913A####— used by some Alpine-manufactured modules.
The label on the back of the radio also includes the part number (39100-SCV-...) — do not submit the part number. If the label is worn or unreadable, use the 1+6 preset button method to retrieve the serial on the screen — see the serial display section for steps.
The Element uses a conventional Honda OEM radio with 6 preset buttons along the faceplate:
- Buttons 1–5 — each scrolls digits 0–9. Press it repeatedly until the correct digit appears.
- Button 6 — press and hold for a few seconds to confirm the complete code.
The Element's wider center console makes the buttons easy to access without stretching. Nothing extra is needed — only the preset buttons on the faceplate.
Code rejection on the Element typically due to a misread serial. The Element's single-DIN radio label is located on the rear face and contains two similar-looking numbers: the serial (e.g., U1234L5678) and the part number (e.g., 39100-SCV-...).
Make sure you used the serial, not the part number. If the code was already rejected, stop before entering more attempts — only 3 tries exist before a 60-minute lockout. Reach out for a complimentary reverification.
The Element radio permits three code attempts before going into lockout. Once locked:
- Leave the ignition ON — avoid switching it off for any reason during the wait.
- Allow the full 60 minutes to elapse. Turning off the key at any point resets the entire 60-minute period.
- After the hour, the radio returns to "CODE" and accepts new input.
The Element's lockout behavior is identical to other Honda models of the same era. If the radio shows "ERR" even after waiting, the unit may need service.
What Caused the Radio to Lock?
The Honda Element radio locks whenever the battery is disconnected or dies. It's the same Honda anti-theft behavior used across every Honda and Acura model of the same era. Typical reasons:
- Battery replacement — overwhelmingly the most typical cause.
- Battery going fully flat — from being parked long-term can drain the battery enough to trigger the lock.
- Electrical work — service requiring a battery disconnect will trigger the code prompt at next startup.
Using the correct unlock code immediately returns full radio function. The lock only reactivates if power is cut again.
