VDO (part of Continental) supplied a very large share of Renault's factory radios, from the RadioSat and update-list CD units through the RENRDW tuner and update-list families to the Carminat navigation systems. Every one of these is locked to the radio's own serial number shown on the case label, from which Renault's four-digit precode and security code are calculated, and never from the vehicle VIN.
When the battery is disconnected or goes flat, a VDO Renault radio enters its anti-theft lock and asks for the code or precode before it will work again.
