Can't Find Your Radio S/N? Follow These Steps for Honda CR-V 2012
The first step is locating the radio S/N.
Most people assume the code depends on the Honda model or year, but in reality, the unlock process depends on the unique radio unit's serial number.
Each radio has its own serial tied to the security system.
This is even better, because if you have an aftermarket radio, the VIN or other Honda-specific data wouldn't help.
Based on the radio used, you can retrieve the serial directly from the display or by checking the label on the radio chassis.
2012 Honda CR-V factory radio lineup
The 2012 CR-V launched the 4th generation RM platform with three head-unit configurations tied to trim level. All units share Honda's coded anti-theft system and request a 5-digit unlock code after any battery disconnection or theft event.
- LX - 160-watt single-CD AM/FM/MP3 receiver with four speakers and a small monochrome status display above the controls.
- EX - 160-watt single-CD unit paired with the 5-inch iMID (intelligent Multi-Information Display) on the upper dash, six speakers, and Pandora/Bluetooth streaming.
- EX-L - same head unit as EX with a 328-watt premium amplifier and seven speakers including subwoofer; iMID is standard.
- EX-L with Navigation - factory hard-disk navigation head unit with voice recognition, FM traffic, and dedicated 7-inch screen replacing the iMID.
Every variant is locked to the VIN through Honda's anti-theft logic, so the original 5-digit code from the glovebox card or Honda's online tool is required to bring the radio out of CODE mode.
Using Hidden Radio Menus to Find the Serial
The method for 2012 Honda CR-V is this:
The 2012 Honda CR-V may feature Honda's Display Audio system (7" depending on trim) or a base non-touchscreen radio. All versions support serial number retrieval via the 1+6 button method:
- Turn ignition to ON. Wait for the radio to boot. The screen shows "CODE" when anti-theft is active.
- Hold down preset buttons 1 and 6 for 3-5 seconds.
- The serial number displays in two halves (e.g.,
U3210+L0482).
Also: On 2012 CR-V with the Display Audio touchscreen, check Settings → System → Device Information – the serial may be listed there without needing the button combination.
How to display the radio serial number on a 2012 CR-V
The 4th gen RM head units expose the serial through Honda's 1+6 dealer-mode shortcut. Use it before calling the dealer or submitting the serial to our system.
- Insert the key and turn the ignition to ACC (accessory) - do not crank the engine.
- Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 simultaneously with one hand.
- While still holding 1 and 6, press the radio power/volume knob to switch the audio unit on.
- Release the buttons after the screen wakes - the display alternates between
Ufollowed by 4 digits andLfollowed by 4 digits. - Write down both halves in order; ignore the U and L letters - the actual serial Honda needs is the resulting 8-character string.
If the screen jumps straight to CODE or Err, the unit has already been locked - the serial cannot be read until the correct code clears the lockout.
Manufacturer Label Inspection
If the serial number cannot be accessed on-screen, use the pull-out method.
Most Honda CR-V factory radios include a label with the serial number printed on the casing.
The process:
- Remove key from ignition.
- Carefully remove surrounding panel pieces.
- Loosen screws holding the radio.
- Pull forward to inspect the label.
If none of these methods succeed on the 2012 Honda CR-V:
- Power down the vehicle.
- Pry off the radio surround. The 2012 CR-V's integrated dashboard uses plastic clips.
- For Display Audio models: Unscrew the fasteners (Phillips-head) securing the display module.
- On base trims: Unscrew the 4 Phillips screws holding the radio unit.
- Ease the unit forward and find the serial on the label on the back or side.
Note: The touchscreen unit is wider and more tightly fitted than the standard radio. Take care when removing it.
Removing the 2012 CR-V head unit safely
Pull the head unit only when the 1+6 method is unavailable (dead unit, swap, or sticker missing). Honda recommends a memory-saver to keep airbag and ECU adaptations alive while the battery is disconnected.
- Safety first - disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait at least 3 minutes before touching dash components to let SRS capacitors discharge.
- Pry off the two upper centre dash vents starting at the top edge - each vent is held by 5 hidden plastic clips.
- Remove the 2 Phillips screws revealed behind the vents that secure the upper trim panel to the radio bezel.
- Use a plastic trim tool to release the bezel surrounding the radio and climate controls; pull straight back to disengage the snap clips.
- Remove the 4 retaining bolts (8 mm head) holding the radio chassis to the dash sub-frame and slide the unit out far enough to access the harness.
- Disconnect the main multi-pin connector, the antenna lead, and on EX-L Navi cars the GPS and FM-distributor leads before fully extracting the unit.
Photograph the serial label on the top or side of the chassis - that is your fallback if the dealer-mode method ever fails on this unit again.

Serial Number Format Guide for 2012 Honda CR-V
Based on the radio installed in the 2012 Honda CR-V:
U1234L5678– Standard Honda OEM formatHBM####– Found on Display Audio and navigation units913A####– Certain Alpine-manufactured units
The 2012 CR-V may have: base CD radio (U/L format), Display Audio 5"/7" (HBM format), or navigation unit (HBM format). All require a 5-digit unlock code.
Important Ensure you record the serial number, not the part number (which starts with 39100, 39101, or similar Honda part coding).
Reading the 2012 CR-V radio serial format
Honda's 4th gen CR-V serial is an 8-character alphanumeric string. The factory sticker on top of the radio chassis prints it after a U or M production prefix.
- Sticker example:
U2200 0055- submit asU2200-0055or simplyU22000055. - On-screen example: the iMID toggles
U2200thenL0055- combine toU22000055(the L is just a screen marker for the lower half). - Common mistakes - confusing the digit 0 with the letter O, or copying only one of the two halves shown on the screen.
- Do not include the dash, spaces, or the sticker barcode digits when entering the serial in our checkout form.
If your sticker shows an M prefix instead of U, that is still a genuine 4th gen CR-V serial - early production runs and replacement service units used the M batch.
Inputting the Security Code
After generating the correct unlock code based on the S/N, you can restore normal functionality by entering it into the unit.
The code entry process depends on the head unit design, but most 2012 CR-V systems follow a similar structure using preset buttons, touch controls, or rotary knobs - depending on if it's a factory or an aftermarket unit.
You will typically see SAFE displayed on screen.
In-depth Entering Instructions for CR-V 2012
To enter the code on the 2012 Honda CR-V:
- Ignition ON. Radio shows "CODE" or "ENTER CODE".
- Non-touchscreen models: Use preset buttons 1-5 to select each digit, then hold button 6 to confirm.
- Display Audio touchscreen: An on-screen keypad may appear. Enter each digit and press "Enter" or "OK".
Lockout: 3 wrong entries cause a 60-minute lockout. Leave ignition ON. Do not cycle the key or the timer starts over.
Entering the 5-digit code on a 2012 CR-V
Once you have the correct 5-digit code, both the LX standard radio and the iMID/Navi units accept it through the front presets. The procedure differs slightly by display type.
- LX standard radio - with the unit showing
CODE, press preset 1 the number of times of the first digit, preset 2 for the second, and so on through preset 5; press the Enter or Seek >> button to submit. - EX/EX-L iMID - hold the power button for ~2 seconds until you hear three beeps, then use presets 1-5 to enter each digit and press Enter/Seek.
- EX-L with Navigation - the touchscreen shows a numeric keypad; tap each digit and press Enter.
- You have 10 attempts total before the unit goes into extended lockout - leave the ignition in ACC for 1 hour with the radio on but volume muted to clear the lockout.
- A successful entry plays a confirmation chime and resumes normal audio operation.
Do not guess - if you only have one or two attempts left, stop and order a verified code so a wrong entry does not push the unit into extended lockout.
How the Code Retrieval Process Works for Honda CR-V 2012
- Skip long troubleshooting discussions or service visits - you can generate the code online with the radio serial number.
- Identify your radio's serial. It is always present on the unit itself, and sometimes you can see it on the CR-V's radio screen.
- Type it into the generator above, and our software will identify the correct 2012 CR-V unlock code.
- After receiving your code, input it using CR-V's radio buttons to unlock the system fully.
- The entire process takes only a few minutes and requires minimal effort.
Why Is the Radio Asking for a Code?
Honda's Display Audio system retains the same anti-theft design as earlier radios: losing battery power activates a code request at next startup. Applies to both the non-touchscreen radio and the Display Audio touchscreen.
- Battery replacement — the usual culprit.
- Battery disconnect during repairs — any work that cuts battery power will activate the lock.
- Completely dead battery — a drained battery has the same result.
Worth knowing: a number of higher-end Display Audio models from this era do not use a traditional code-based lock — if the radio never showed "CODE" after a battery change, it may use a different anti-theft method linked to the vehicle VIN.
Understanding Unlock Issues with Your CR-V
Code entry depends on the specific radio in the Display Audio-era CR-V:
- Non-touchscreen base radio: Press preset buttons 1–5 to cycle to each digit, then press and hold button 6 to confirm — identical to older Honda platforms.
- Display Audio 5" or 7" touchscreen: An on-screen numeric keypad appears when the code prompt is active. Enter the digits and press OK or Enter on screen.
Should the touch input not work, try the physical preset buttons — certain units accept both input method. Make sure the screen is fully booted before attempting entry.
When the touchscreen powers on but goes straight to the home screen without a "CODE" display, consider these points:
- Anti-theft may not have triggered — certain battery changes don't trigger the lock if done quickly enough.
- On some Display Audio units, the code prompt appears only on the audio portion of the screen, not the navigation display — give it a few seconds after startup.
- Try the Settings → System → Device Information route; if the serial is visible there, the unit could still be functional without a code.
Should none of the above match, checking the radio fuse is the next step — a failed fuse prevents the radio from powering on at all.
The Display Audio era includes radios using multiple serial prefixes depending on the trim level:
U####L####— base CD radio serial (10 characters, two halves).HBM####— Display Audio 5"/7" and navigation units.913A####— certain Alpine OEM units.
Part numbers on the same label start with 39100 or 39101 — do not submit these. If uncertain, use the Settings → Device Information menu or the 1+6 button method to display the serial directly from the unit.
For Display Audio-era Honda radios, a rejected code usually points to the serial was taken from the wrong source. Either retrieval method can produce the correct serial — verify that the serial you submitted came from the radio itself and not from an online database.
If the code was already entered once and rejected, pause and reach out before trying again — a second wrong attempt brings you closer to the 60-minute lockout. A free serial reverification is available on request.
The Display Audio platform uses the same three-try lockout as earlier Honda radios. To recover:
- Keep the ignition in ON or ACC — avoid turning it off.
- Allow the full 60-minute period. The touchscreen may go to sleep during this time — this is expected.
- After 60 minutes, the radio re-displays "CODE" and you can.
On Display Audio touchscreen models, the lockout countdown operates even when the screen is off. Simply leave the vehicle running or the ignition on ACC until the timer expires.
