Radio Serial Number Explained - Finding It on Your Honda
Very important thing to know is that factory radios use a unique serial number to identify each unit.
The anti-theft system links the code directly to the serial.
Unlike car-specific data such as VIN or registration info, it is not determined by the model or production year, so you'll be able to retrieve it even if you have a radio that you bought afterwards.
Depending on the manufacturer and radio installed in your Honda HR-V, the retrieval method is different.
These are the most reliable ways to locate it.
Factory radios fitted to the 2016 Honda HR-V
The 2016 model year is the US-market launch of the 1st gen HR-V (chassis RU), and the audio line-up follows the same split as the related Fit GK on which the platform is based. The LX trim runs a 5-inch color audio system with physical buttons and a volume knob, AM/FM, Bluetooth HandsFreeLink, a single USB input and a 4-speaker layout. EX and EX-L Navi step up to the 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen with HondaLink, capacitive controls without a physical volume knob, swipe and pinch gestures, two USB ports and a 6-speaker layout that adds tweeters to the basic configuration. EX-L Navi layers Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation with voice recognition onto the same 7-inch head unit. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not present on the 2016 launch software; smartphone integration on the 1st gen HR-V is provided through HondaLink only at this point.
Accessing the Serial Number Through the Radio Menu
Try the following for your 2016 Honda HR-V:
The 2016 Honda HR-V may be equipped with Honda's Display Audio system (5" depending on trim) or a standard non-touchscreen radio. Either type support serial number retrieval via the 1+6 button method:
- Turn ignition to ON. Wait for the radio to turn on. The screen shows "CODE" when locked.

Reading the serial on a 2016 HR-V factory radio
On the 2016 HR-V the most widely documented way to read the device serial is to turn the ignition to ACC or ON with the audio unit powered off, press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 together on the head unit, and then press the radio power button while still holding 1 and 6 to wake the unit into a service screen. Where the screen appears, it alternates between a screen prefixed with the letter U followed by four characters and a screen prefixed with the letter L followed by four characters; recording both halves and concatenating them in order yields the 8-character serial used by Honda's lookup. The U and L are screen labels and are not part of the value entered. The on-screen procedure is well documented for many other US-market Honda Display Audio units of the same era, but for the 1st gen HR-V Display Audio the on-screen path has not been independently confirmed across multiple HR-V-specific sources, so the chassis label exposed during removal and a Honda dealer reading via the HDS scan tool are the more reliable fallbacks if the service screen does not appear.
Taking Out the Radio Unit to See the S/N on the Tag
If the serial does not appear in menu, the next step is checking the radio itself.
Many Honda radios require physical access to the ID label attached to the unit.
Typical approach:
- Start by completely powering down the engine - pull the key out.
- Then detach the dashboard bezel.
- Next, loosen the mounting points and move the radio forward.
- Look for a factory sticker showing the serial number.
If none of these methods display the serial on the 2016 Honda HR-V:
- Turn off the vehicle.
- Pry off the radio surround. The 2016 HR-V's modern dashboard uses plastic clips.
- For Display Audio models: Unscrew the mounting screws (Phillips) securing the screen unit.
- For standard radios: Unscrew the 4 Phillips screws holding the head unit.
- Ease the unit forward and find the serial on the label on the back or side.
Tip: The Display Audio unit is larger and more tightly fitted than the base radio. Take care when extracting it.
Removing the radio on a 2016 HR-V to read the serial label
Disconnect the negative battery cable first and wait several minutes for the SRS capacitors to discharge before working in the dash; do not touch the steering wheel area or any airbag connectors during this time. The 1st gen HR-V uses a clip-retained center bezel rather than visible screws around the head unit, so begin at a lower corner of the bezel surrounding the audio unit and the climate controls and pull rearward with plastic trim tools to release the perimeter clips, working evenly around the panel so no clip is over-stressed. As the bezel comes free, tilt it out far enough to disconnect the hazard switch and any accessory harnesses on its rear and set it aside on a soft cloth. With the bezel removed, take out the screws that secure the audio unit bracket to the dash frame, then slide the audio unit straight out, supporting it from underneath as the last fastener comes free. Disconnect the antenna lead and the multi-pin connectors on the rear and read or photograph the chassis label on the side or top of the unit; the printed 8-character serial should match the value returned by the on-screen procedure where it is available. Use only plastic trim tools throughout to avoid scratching the soft-touch surround, and keep the screws sorted because lengths can differ between the trim panel and the head-unit bracket.

What the 2016 HR-V radio serial usually looks like
The 1st gen HR-V factory radio is reported to use the same 8-character alphanumeric serial format as other US-market Honda Display Audio units of its era, with the value commonly numeric on the LX 5-inch unit and on most EX and EX-L Navi 7-inch Display Audio units. Where the on-screen procedure works, the first half is shown after the letter U on screen one and the second half after the letter L on screen two, and the letters themselves are screen labels that should not be entered into Honda's lookup tools. A representative format reads U1234 followed by L5678, which corresponds to a stored serial of 12345678 for the lookup. Some chassis labels carry a longer alphanumeric string with a manufacturer prefix on the printed sticker; the 8 characters that match the on-screen U and L pair are the ones used for the lookup. If the printed and displayed serials disagree, the on-screen value is generally the one accepted by the official Honda radio code portal, with the chassis label retained as a fallback when the service screen cannot be triggered.
Entering the Radio Security Code
After locating the radio serial and generated the unlock code, the final step is entering it into your radio.
Honda OEM units display a CODE prompt when ready for input.
The process is straightforward, but button layouts and confirmation methods may vary depending on the radio version installed in your HR-V.
The Correct Way to Enter It
To input the code on the 2016 Honda HR-V:
- Ignition ON. Radio displays "CODE" or "ENTER CODE".
- Non-touchscreen models: Press preset buttons 1-5 to select each digit, then hold button 6 to confirm.
- Display Audio touchscreen: An on-screen keypad is displayed. Enter each digit and press "Enter" or "OK".
Lockout: Three wrong attempts activate a 60-minute lockout. Leave ignition ON. Don't cycle the key or the timer resets.
Entering the unlock code on a 2016 HR-V radio

Understanding Unlock Issues with Your HR-V
For Display Audio-era Honda radios, a rejected code usually points to the serial was misread. Both the button method and the settings menu can produce the correct serial — double-check that the serial you submitted was read off the radio itself and not from the owner's card.

If the Display Audio screen comes on but shows the home screen without any "CODE" prompt, check the following:
- Anti-theft may not have triggered — some battery changes skip the lock if done quickly enough.
- Certain Display Audio units, the code prompt shows only on the audio portion of the screen, not the navigation display — wait a moment after startup.
- Check the Settings → System → Device Information route; if the serial is visible there, the unit could still be functional without a code.
Should none of the above match, a fuse check is the next step — a failed fuse will stop the radio from showing any display at all.
The Display Audio platform applies the same 3-attempt lockout as older Honda radios. To exit lockout:
- Keep the ignition in ON or ACC — avoid turning it off.
- Wait out the full 60-minute period. The touchscreen may go to sleep during this time — that's normal.
- After 60 minutes, the radio re-displays "CODE" and another attempt is possible.
On Display Audio touchscreen models, the lockout countdown operates even when the screen is off. Simply leave the vehicle running or the ignition on ACC for the full hour.
The Display Audio era covers radios using multiple serial prefixes depending on the trim level:
U####L####— base CD radio serial (10 characters, two halves).HBM####— Display Audio 5"/7" and navigation units.913A####— certain Alpine OEM configurations.
Part numbers on the same label start with 39100 or 39101 — these are not serials. When in doubt, use the Settings → Device Information menu or the 1+6 button method to retrieve the serial directly from the radio.
Entry method depends on the exact radio variant in the 2014–2021 HR-V:
- Non-touchscreen base radio: Use preset buttons 1–5 to cycle to each digit, then hold button 6 to confirm — identical to older Honda platforms.
- Display Audio 5" or 7" touchscreen: An on-screen numeric keypad is shown when the code prompt is active. Tap each digit and press OK or Enter on screen.
If the touchscreen is unresponsive, try the physical preset buttons — certain units accept both input method. Make sure the screen is fully booted before starting entry.
Why Did the Radio Lock and Ask for a Code?
Honda's Display Audio system carries the same anti-theft architecture as earlier radios: losing battery power triggers a code request at next startup. This affects both the non-touchscreen radio and the Display Audio touchscreen.
- Battery replacement — the usual culprit.
- Battery disconnect during repairs — service that cuts battery power will re-engage the lock.
- Completely dead battery — a fully discharged battery also triggers the request.
Note: a number of higher-end Display Audio models from the 2014–2021 period might not use a traditional code-based lock — if the radio never showed "CODE" after losing power, it may use a different anti-theft method tied to the vehicle VIN.
