Finding the Radio S/N for Honda
The first step is to find and write down the radio's serial num.
Based on the head unit type used in your 2002 Odyssey, the serial can usually be accessed either through the display menu or by pulling the unit out and checking the label on the radio itself.
Below are the most common methods to identify your serial quickly.
2002 Honda Odyssey factory radios by trim
- LX - AM/FM single-disc CD head unit with optional cassette; can drive the under-seat CD changer accessory.
- EX - AM/FM CD + cassette combo head unit with steering-wheel audio controls.
- EX-L (new for 2002) - Premium AM/FM CD + cassette unit (P/N 39100-S0X-A500, face
1TX0) compatible with rear-seat entertainment / DVD pass-through controls; some EX-L builds add a 6-disc in-dash changer. - All trims use the Honda 5-digit anti-theft system. No factory navigation was offered on the 2002 RL1 Odyssey.
Before Removing the Radio, Try This Screen Method
Try the following for your 2002 Honda Odyssey:
The 2002 Honda Odyssey is equipped with a single-DIN CD radio produced by Alpine or Panasonic for Honda. You can retrieve the serial number without removing the radio:
- Turn the ignition to ON (or ACC). The radio should show "CODE" if locked.
- Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 together for about 5 seconds.
- The display will cycle through a 10-character serial number in two parts (e.g.,
U3210thenL0482).
Note: Record both parts accurately – the complete serial is both codes combined, for example U3210L0482. Some 2002 Odyssey radios may require you to press 1+6 a second time to reveal the second half.
Find the S/N by Pulling Out the Radio
If the serial number cannot be accessed on-screen, use the pull-out method.
Most Honda Odyssey factory radios include a sticker with the serial number printed on the casing.
The process:
- Ensure the ignition is off.
- Lift away surrounding mounting frame.
- Release clips holding the radio.
- Move slightly to inspect the label.
If the preset button method is unavailable on your 2002 Honda Odyssey, you can take out the radio to locate the serial label:
- Turn off the vehicle and take the key out.
- Pry off the center console trim using a plastic pry tool. Honda trim pieces are typically held by friction clips.
- Unscrew the four Phillips screws holding the radio to the dash bracket.
- Ease the radio out and find the white sticker with the serial number on the top of the radio casing.
Tip: Earlier Honda radios are easy to handle. The single-DIN unit comes out smoothly once the screws are removed.
2002 Honda Odyssey radio removal
- Safety: Disconnect the negative battery cable and have the 5-digit anti-theft code ready - the radio will lock and ask for
CODEas soon as power returns. - Carefully pry the silver/woodgrain dash bezel that wraps the HVAC and radio area outward with plastic trim tools. It is retained only by spring clips - no screws on the face.
- Remove the two (sometimes four) 8mm / Phillips screws that fasten the head unit chassis to the dash frame.
- Pull the unit straight back, disconnect the multi-pin harness and the antenna lead, and lift it out. The 8-character serial label is on the top of the chassis.
- On EX-L cars, also unplug the auxiliary cassette/CD harness used for the rear-entertainment pass-through before fully removing the unit.

How Serial Numbers Usually Look on These Odyssey Radios
The 2002 Honda Odyssey radio serial number uses the standard Honda OEM format:
U1234L5678– The standard Honda factory format – two halves displayed separately (U####thenL####), combined into a 10-character serial
The radio in the 2002 Odyssey is a standard-size CD player manufactured by Alpine or Panasonic under Honda's OEM agreement.
Important The serial is 10 characters (U + 4 digits + L + 4 digits). Don't confuse it with the part number (usually starts with 39100, 39101, etc.).
2002 Odyssey radio serial format
- The OEM head unit reports an 8-character alphanumeric serial split across two display screens.
- To trigger the on-screen display, hold presets
1and6while turning the radio on - it showsU####, then alternates toL####. - The full serial is the four characters after U followed by the four characters after L (drop the U/L letters themselves).
- The same 8-character value is printed on a paper/foil label on the top of the radio chassis once it has been removed from the dash.
How Our Radio Code Generator Works for 2002 Honda Odyssey
Vehicle radios use security codes dependent on the radio unit itself instead of the vehicle model or production year.
- The system uses the Odyssey's radio serial to retrieve the unlock code.
- When you input the serial into the generator, the system identifies the radio family and generates the code that you need.
- You can then enter the code directly into your Honda radio.
- This approach saves time compared to traditional methods for 2002 Honda Odyssey.
Code Entry Process for 2002 Odyssey
Once the system gives you 2002 Honda Odyssey radio code from the serial number, you're ready to reactivate the radio.
Many drivers hesitate at this stage because input methods can look different across radio versions, but it's usually simple.
When the radio shows CODE, it means the unit is waiting for the correct numbers.
Step-by-Step - Correct Entering Process
To input the unlock code on the 2002 Honda Odyssey:
- Turn ignition to ON. The radio displays "CODE".
- Use preset buttons 1 through 5 to enter your 5-digit code:
- Press button 1 multiple times until the 1st digit appears
- Press button 2 for the second digit, and so on
- Press and hold preset button 6 for a few seconds to confirm.
Lockout: After 3 incorrect attempts, the radio locks out. Leave the ignition ON for 1 hour, then try again. Don't turn the key off or the timer resets.
2002 Honda Odyssey radio code entry
- Turn the ignition to ACC or ON until the display shows
CODE. - Press the preset buttons that match the digits of the 5-digit code, in order, each press entering one digit (e.g. for
53214: preset 5, then 3, then 2, then 1, then 4). - No confirm press is normally needed; once the fifth digit is in and the code is correct, the radio will resume normal play.
- You have around 10 attempts before
CODE ERROR Eappears. To clear it, leave the ignition on (radio powered) for about an hour, or pull and reinsert the No. B15 (20 A) fuse from the under-hood box for another 10 attempts.
What Caused the Radio to Lock?
Honda's older radios feature a built-in anti-theft system that engages whenever the radio is cut off from its battery connection. Frequent triggers include:
- Battery replacement — the most common cause; removing the battery wipes the radio's memory.
- Dead battery — a drained battery can have the same effect as a disconnected one.
- Electrical repair work — service work that involves disconnecting power will trigger the lock.
This lock mechanism was intended to deter theft by making the radio non-functional after removal. Once you supply the correct code, the radio unlocks permanently until the next battery disconnect.
Understanding Unlock Issues with Your Odyssey
The most likely reason a code is rejected is entering a code generated from the wrong serial number. On older Honda radios, the label on the back of the unit carries two items: the serial number (e.g., U1234L5678) and the part number (e.g., 39100-SCV-...). Confirm you submitted the serial, not the part number.
Double-check that you read the full 10-character serial correctly — the letter O and the digit zero look similar on these older labels. Reach out to us for a free reverification if the code was rejected.
When the radio comes on but never shows the "CODE" prompt, several things could be happening:
- The unit may still be in an unlocked state — try using it directly first.
- Some older Honda radios show "CODE E" instead of simply "CODE" — this also means the same thing and code entry works the same way.
- It could be in an error state from a previous lockout — leave ignition ON for one hour, then look again.
If the screen stays blank, check that the radio has power — the ignition fuse may have failed during the battery disconnect that triggered the code request.
On older Honda single-DIN radios, code entry uses the 6 preset buttons along the bottom of the faceplate:
- Buttons 1 through 5 — use each to enter one digit of the five-digit code. Pressing it multiple times cycles through digits 0–9.
- Button 6 — hold this for a few seconds to confirm the entered code.
Some early Honda models used a slightly alternate layout where buttons read 1–4 plus SCAN and RPT — in that case, use SCAN or RPT to confirm instead of button 6. Check your owner's manual if unsure which button confirms.
If the radio enters a lockout state after 3 wrong entries, keep the ignition turned ON and wait for one full hour. Do not turn the key to ACC or OFF during this period — doing so restarts the timer from zero.
Once the hour has elapsed, the radio will leave the lockout and display "CODE" again. Then you can re-enter the correct code. If the radio shows "ERR" or remains locked after waiting, contact support — some older Honda units require a dealer reset in extreme cases.
The serial number and the part number sit on the same label on the unit chassis. It's a common mistake:
- Serial number: usually starts with
Ufollowed by digits, thenLand more digits — for exampleU1234L5678. This is what you need. - Part number: begins with
39100or39101— this is not the serial.
Should the label is worn, try the 1+6 preset button method to display the serial on the radio screen instead. See the serial display section above for step-by-step guidance.
