Where to Find the Serial Number on your Odyssey
The important thing to know is that factory radios use a unique S/N to identify each unitindividually.
The anti-theft system links the code directly to the serial.
Different from vehicle-specific data such as VIN or registration info, it is not determined by the model or production year, so you'll be able to retrieve it even if you have an aftermarket radio.
Depending on the maker and radio installed in your Honda Odyssey, the retrieval method varies.
Here are the most reliable ways to find it.
2004 Honda Odyssey factory radios by trim
2004 was the last year of the RL1 generation and kept the same audio line-up: LX with an AM/FM single-CD head unit, EX with the AM/FM CD + cassette combo, and EX-L with the AM/FM CD + cassette unit (P/N 39100-S0X-A500, face 1TX0) tied into the rear-seat entertainment system; some EX-L builds add the 6-disc in-dash changer. All units rely on the Honda 5-digit anti-theft code, and factory navigation was still not available - it arrived on the 3rd-gen RL3 for 2005.
Accessing the Serial Number Through the Radio Menu
Try the following for your 2004 Honda Odyssey:
The 2004 Honda Odyssey is equipped with a single-DIN CD radio made by Alpine or Panasonic for Honda. You can retrieve the serial number without removing the radio:
- Turn the ignition to ON (or ACC). The radio should show "CODE" if the anti-theft is active.
- Simultaneously press preset buttons 1 and 6 together for 3-5 seconds.
- The display will reveal a 10-character serial number in two parts (e.g.,
U3210thenL0482).
Tip: Note both parts carefully – the full serial is the two halves together, for example U3210L0482. Some 2004 Odyssey radios may require you to press 1+6 a second time to show the second half.
Locate Serial on Odyssey's Radio Chassis
If the serial does not appear on screen, the next step is checking the radio itself.
Many Honda radios require physical access to the serial tag attached to the unit.
Common approach:
- Start by completely powering down the engine - pull the key out.
- Then lift the dashboard bezel.
- Next, loosen the mounting points and pull the radio forward.
- Look for a barcode label showing the serial number.
If the button method is unavailable on your 2004 Honda Odyssey, you can take out the radio to locate the serial label:
- Turn off the vehicle and remove the key.
- Remove the radio surround using a trim removal tool. Honda trim pieces are usually held by friction clips.
- Unscrew the four Phillips-head screws securing the radio in place.
- Pull the radio forward and find the white sticker with the serial number on the top of the radio casing.
Note: Older Honda radios are compact. The single-DIN unit comes out easily once the screws are removed.

Safety first: Disconnect the negative battery cable, wait three minutes, and verify you have the 5-digit anti-theft code from the owner's documentation. With the bezel still in place, gently pry the silver/woodgrain dash trim that surrounds the HVAC and radio outward using a plastic trim tool - it is clipped only, with no screws on the face. Remove the two upper Phillips/8mm screws holding the head unit to the dash, slide the chassis straight back, and unplug the multi-pin harness, the antenna, and (on EX-L) the rear-entertainment harness. The 8-character serial label is on the top of the chassis.

Typical Serial Number Formats for 2004 Odyssey Radios
The 2004 Honda Odyssey radio serial number follows the standard Honda OEM format:
U1234L5678– The typical Honda factory format – two halves displayed separately (U####thenL####), combined into a 10-character serial
The radio in the 2004 Odyssey is a single-DIN CD unit from Alpine or Panasonic under Honda's OEM agreement.
Important The serial is 10 characters (U + 4 digits + L + 4 digits). Do not mistake it with the part number (usually starts with 39100, 39101, etc.).
2004 Odyssey radio serial format
The 2004 Odyssey OEM head unit identifies itself with an 8-character alphanumeric serial presented in two halves. Hold presets 1 and 6 together while powering the radio on; the screen alternates between U#### and L####. Drop the U and L letters and combine the eight characters in order to form the full serial - that value is what dealers and code-lookup services use to generate the unique 5-digit unlock code. The same number is printed on a sticker on the top of the radio chassis once the unit is pulled from the dash.
Unlocking the Radio After Code Generation
After generating the correct unlock code based on the S/N, you can restore default functionality by entering it into the unit.
The code entry process depends on the radio interface, but most 2004 Odyssey systems follow a similar structure using preset buttons, touch controls, or rotary knobs - depending on if it's a factory or an aftermarket unit.
You will typically see ENTER CODE displayed on screen.
Step-by-Step Code Input Guide
To enter the unlock code on the 2004 Honda Odyssey:
- Turn ignition to ON. The radio displays "CODE".
- Use preset buttons 1 through 5 to enter your 5-digit code:
- Press button 1 multiple times until the first digit appears
- Press button 2 for the 2nd digit, and so on
- Press and hold preset button 6 for a few seconds to confirm.
Lockout: After three incorrect attempts, the radio enters lockout. Keep the ignition ON for 1 hour, then re-enter. Do not turn the key off or the timer restarts.
2004 Honda Odyssey radio code entry
With the ignition in ACC or ON and CODE on the display, enter the 5-digit anti-theft code in sequence, giving each digit one press of the preset with that number (preset 2 = the digit 2, preset 5 = the digit 5). A correct code is normally accepted after the fifth digit, without a confirm press. The radio permits about 10 attempts; after that it locks and shows CODE ERROR E. To clear the lockout, either leave the radio powered on for roughly an hour and re-enter the correct code, or pull the No. B15 (20 A) fuse from the under-hood fuse/relay box and reinsert it for another 10 attempts.
Understanding the 2004 Honda Odyssey Radio Code Retrieval Process
To get the code, you'll take only a few easy steps.
- Find the radio's serial - this is the only info required by our side.
Unlike dealership lookup, no VIN or paperwork is needed. - Enter the serial number into our generator above.
Our system checks it against a database of supported radios and automatically finds the matching anti-theft code. - In most cases, the code will appear instantly on the screen after payment and is also sent to your email for backup.
If we need to check it manually, you'll be notified before checkout. - Once you get it, just enter it into the radio to restore the functionality.
Understanding Unlock Issues with Your Odyssey
When the radio shows a lockout state after three wrong entries, keep the ignition turned ON and wait for one full hour. Don't turn the key off during this period — doing so restarts the timer from zero.
Once the hour has elapsed, the radio exits the lockout and display "CODE" again. At that point you can re-enter the correct code. Should the display show "ERR" or remains locked after waiting, contact support — some older Honda units require a dealer reset in extreme cases.
The most common reason a code is rejected is entering a code generated from the wrong serial number. On older Honda radios, the label on the back of the unit carries both: the serial number (e.g., U1234L5678) and the part number (e.g., 39100-SCV-...). Make sure you submitted the serial, not the part number.
Double-check that you read the full 10-character serial correctly — O vs 0 look similar on these older labels. Reach out to us for a no-charge recheck if the code was rejected.
On older Honda single-DIN radios, code entry uses the 6 preset buttons along the bottom of the faceplate:
- Buttons 1 through 5 — each one sets one digit of the five-digit code. Press a button repeatedly scrolls through digits 0–9.
- Button 6 — press and hold this button for a few seconds to confirm the entered code.
Some early Honda models used a slightly alternate layout where buttons read 1–4 plus SCAN and RPT — in that case, use SCAN or RPT to confirm instead of button 6. Consult your owner's manual if unsure which button confirms.
When the radio powers on but does not display the "CODE" prompt, several things could be happening:
- It's possible the anti-theft hasn't triggered — attempt using it normally first.
- Certain Honda radios show "CODE E" instead of simply "CODE" — both mean the same thing and code entry proceeds identically.
- It could be in an error state from a previous lockout — leave ignition ON for one hour, then check again.
If the screen shows nothing, verify that the radio has power — the ignition fuse may have failed during the battery disconnect that triggered the code request.
The serial number and the part number appear on the identical label on the unit chassis. They are easy to mix up:
- Serial number: typically starts with
Ufollowed by digits, thenLand more digits — for exampleU1234L5678. This is the correct value to submit. - Part number: starts with
39100or39101— do not use this as the serial.
Should the label is unreadable, use the 1+6 preset button method to retrieve the serial on the radio screen as an alternative. See the serial display section above for step-by-step instructions.
What Caused the Radio to Lock?
Honda's older radios feature a built-in anti-theft system that activates whenever the radio is cut off from its power supply. Frequent triggers include:
- Battery replacement — the most common cause; removing the battery resets the radio's memory.
- Dead battery — a fully discharged battery also triggers the lock as a disconnected one.
- Electrical repair work — repairs that involves disconnecting the battery will trigger the lock.
This lock mechanism was intended to prevent theft by making the radio useless after removal. As soon as you enter the correct code, the radio unlocks permanently until the next battery disconnect.
