Why Did the Radio Lock and Ask for a Code?
Battery replacement is the number one reason for a locked radio on Renault vehicles, but there are a few others to be aware of:
- Battery replacement: Battery replacement is the top reason across all Renault models. The lock activates any time 12V power is interrupted. This is extremely common, even during a very short disconnect.
- Second-hand purchase: The original code is seldom included when a car changes hands. Both trade and private sellers often do not have it.
- Discharged battery: A battery drained from sitting unused triggers the code request when power is restored.
- Service disconnect: Service that disconnects the battery — including an MOT, tyre change, or oil change — may activate the code request.
Finding the Radio S/N for Renault
Very important fact to know is that factory radios use a unique serial number to identify each unitindividually.
Your security system links the code directly to this serial.
Different from car-specific data such as VIN or registration information, it is not determined by the model or production year, so you'll be able to get it even if you have an aftermarket radio.
Depending on the manufacturer and radio installed in your Renault Clio, the access method varies.
These are the most reliable ways to locate it.
Which Head Unit Is in Your 1998 Clio?
1998 was the transition year between Mk1 (X57) and Mk2 (X65). Early 1998 production retained Philips-supplied Renault cassette head units; later 1998 cars introduced refreshed Renault head units that prefigure the Mk2 Tuner family.
- Renault Cassette (Mk1 carry-over): single-DIN tape unit with 1-6 preset row, Renault badge.
- Renault Cassette/Tuner (early Mk2): same single-DIN form factor with updated graphics, still Philips-built.
- Identification cue: check the faceplate text. Mk1 carry-over units typically read RENAULT only; later units may display TUNER or similar wording above the preset row.
Screen-Based Serial Lookup Method
The method for 1998 Renault Clio is this:
The 1998 Renault Clio comes with a Philips OEM radio or MediaNav system. Most Renault radios don't support an on-screen serial number retrieval method.
The serial number is located on a label on the radio unit. The radio must be partially removed to access it. Some newer Clio with MediaNav may show the serial in Settings → System.
Pulling Out the Unit to View the S/N on the Tag
If the serial number cannot be accessed on-screen, use the removal method.
Most Renault Clio OEM radios include a label with the serial number printed on the housing.
Step-by-Step Approach:
- Switch off the vehicle.
- Lift the trim surrounding the radio.
- Loosen the clips.
- Slide the unit forward to access the label.
The serial number is usually located near the manufacturer sticker.
To find the serial on the 1998 Renault Clio:
- Turn off the vehicle.
- Find the release slots on both sides of the radio. Renault radios typically use pin-release extraction slots.
- Insert radio release keys and slide the radio out.
- Locate the serial on the manufacturer label on the chassis. It begins with CC.
Note: Renault radio release keys are the same European-style tools used for Fiat vehicles.
Manufacturer Label Inspection
Whichever variant is fitted, the 1998 head unit is a single-DIN cassette in a DIN cage with side spring clips. The serial number lives on a chassis label.
- Safety first: ignition off, key out, negative battery terminal disconnected, wait several minutes, and stay clear of yellow airbag connectors.
- Insert a pair of Renault DIN release keys into the two holes on each side of the faceplate. Push them in until the side clips release.
- Pull both keys outward in parallel so the unit slides forward in its cage. If movement is restricted, withdraw and re-seat the keys rather than forcing the trim.
- Once the unit is partially clear, disconnect the antenna and ISO connectors. Do not power the unit while disconnected.
- Look for a white printed sticker on the top, side, or rear of the chassis. The serial appears next to S/N or Serial, alongside a Renault 7700 / 8200 / 2811 part-number band. Photograph the label.
- Verify ambiguous characters with a flashlight: 0 vs O, 1 vs I.

Typical Radio Serial Prefixes and Formats
The 1998 Renault Clio radio serial formats:
BP####– Blaupunkt radio serial (most common)CC####– Continental radio serialPH####– Philips radio serialPR####– Alternate Renault OEM prefix
The serial is found on the radio unit. Do not mistake it with the Renault part number.
How Serial Numbers Usually Look on These Clio Radios
Serial format is dictated by the radio supplier. Both Mk1 carry-over and early Mk2 1998 units are Philips-built and present the serial on a printed chassis label.
- Look for the S/N or Serial heading on the white sticker; the 7700 / 8200 / 2811 block is the Renault part number.
- The serial is typically a short alphanumeric string adjacent to the S/N marking.
- Confirm 0 vs O and 1 vs I before submission; do not submit barcode-only references.
How Our Radio Code Generator Works for 1998 Renault Clio
Getting your radio code takes only 4 simple steps.
- Locate your radio's serial number - this is the only info required by our side.
Unlike dealership lookup, no VIN or paperwork is needed. - Enter the serial number into our generator above.
Our system checks it against a database of supported units and automatically finds the matching anti-theft code. - In most cases, the code will appear instantly on the screen after you pay and is also sent to your email , just in case.
If manual verification is required (rare situations), you'll be notified before checkout. - When you receive the code, simply enter it into the radio to restore the functionality.
Inputting the Security Code
Once the system gives you 1998 Renault Clio radio code from the S/N, you're ready to reactivate the radio.
Some drivers get stuck at this stage because input process can look different across radio versions, but it's usually simple.
When the radio shows dashed lines, it means the unit is waiting for the correct numbers.
In-depth Input Instructions for Clio 1998
To input the code on the 1998 Renault Clio:
- Ignition ON. Radio displays "CODE" or four dashes (----).
- Press preset buttons 1-4 to enter each digit of the 4-digit code. Each press cycles the digit (0-9).
- Hold button 5 or button 6 to submit.
Lockout: Several incorrect entries will trigger a lockout. Leave the radio for approximately half an hour, then retry.
Correct Entering Process
Limited Attempt Warning: incorrect entries trigger a WAIT state that lengthens with each failure (commonly doubling up to around 32 minutes). Verify the 4-digit code before any input.
- Switch ignition to ON or accessory and power the radio. The display should show 0000 or a CODE prompt.
- Press preset 1 repeatedly to set the first digit, then preset 2 for the second, preset 3 for the third, and preset 4 for the fourth.
- Press and hold preset 6 (preset 5 on certain units) for approximately 5 seconds until a confirmation beep is heard.
- If WAIT or ERROR is displayed, leave the radio powered on with the ignition active until the timer expires. Disconnecting the battery does not shorten the lockout.
Clio 1998 Common Radio Problems
If the radio powers on without prompting for a code, try the following:
- Force the code prompt: Pull the radio fuse briefly, refit, and turn the ignition on. The CODE prompt should appear.
- It may already be working: If the radio plays stations and responds to all controls, it is not locked. No code entry is needed.
- MediaNav units: Renault MediaNav does not show a code prompt the same way. Check Settings → System for unlock or serial options.
- Ignition position: Older Renault radios sometimes only display the CODE screen when the ignition is in ACC or ON. Try both.
Code entry on Renault Clio radios uses the preset station buttons to dial in the code digit by digit.
- Button 1 sets the first digit — each press cycles from 0 to 9.
- Button 2 controls digit 2, button 3 digit 3, button 4 digit 4.
- Once all four digits are correct, hold down button 5, button 6, or the Enter / AM-FM button to submit the entry.
Important: Some later Renault models use an on-screen keypad instead of preset buttons. Tap the digits on the on-screen number pad. The touchscreen confirms automatically.
The screen reads "WAIT" / "SAFE" after 3 wrong code attempts, preventing further input until the timer resets.
Clearing the wait: Turn the ignition to ON and leave it there for a full 60 minutes. Switching off mid-wait resets the countdown to zero. This is particularly important — the timer does not pause, it restarts.
With Renault vehicles, battery drain during a long wait is possible. Run the engine or connect a charger where practical to keep voltage stable.
The serial number on Renault radios is on a label on the rear or side of the radio unit, only accessible after removing the unit.
- What to look for: The serial starts with BP, CC, PH, or PR followed by numbers and letters.
- If the label is hard to read: Older Renault labels can be faded. Photograph under good light and zoom in — detail is easier to read in a zoomed image.
- How to access the serial: Standard DIN release keys fit all Renault radios. Insert them into the holes on both sides of the radio and draw the unit out far enough to read the rear label.
Do not use the vehicle VIN or dashboard label number — they are not the radio serial and will generate the wrong result.
If the radio rejects your code, work through the following before entering it again.
- Verify the serial prefix: Renault radios take serials starting with BP, CC, PH, or PR. Make sure you entered the correct serial from the radio label — not any other sticker inside the car.
- Check for misread characters: With older Blaupunkt/Philips stickers, 0 and O, 1 and I, and 8 and B look similar. Take a clear photo and examine it carefully.
- Entry method: Each press of a preset button advances the digit by one. Pressing too quickly can skip over the correct digit. Count each press and take it slowly. Only confirm once all four digits are correct.
