Locate the Serial Number Needed to Generate Honda Insight 2020 Radio Code
Very useful fact to know is that factory radios use a specific S/N to identify each unitindividually.
The security system links the code directly to this serial.
Unlike vehicle-specific data like VIN or registration information, it is not determined by the model or production year, so you'll be able to get it even if you have an aftermarket radio.
Depending on the maker and radio installed in your Honda Insight, the access method is different.
These are the best ways to find it.
Find Your Serial Number on the Radio Screen
These are the steps you need to follow for 2020 Honda Insight:
The 2020 Honda Insight could have Honda's Display Audio system (8" depending on trim) or a standard non-touchscreen radio. Both types support serial number display via the 1+6 button method:
- Turn ignition to ON. Let the radio to turn on. The screen shows "CODE" when anti-theft is active.
- Hold down preset buttons 1 and 6 for 3-5 seconds.
- The serial number appears in two halves (e.g.,
U3210+L0482).
Alternative: On 2020 Insight with the Display Audio touchscreen, look in Settings → System → Device Information – the serial may be displayed there without using the button combination.
Serial Number on the Unit
If the serial number cannot be accessed on-screen, use the removal method.
Most Honda Insight OEM radios include a tag with the serial number printed on the chassis.
The process:
- Remove key from ignition.
- Carefully remove surrounding dashboard trim.
- Release clips holding the radio.
- Move slightly to inspect the label.
If neither methods succeed on the 2020 Honda Insight:
- Turn off the vehicle.
- Pry off the dashboard trim. The 2020 Insight's modern dashboard uses snap-fit clips.
- For Display Audio models: Unscrew the fasteners (Phillips-head) securing the screen unit.
- On base trims: Remove the 4 Phillips screws holding the radio unit.
- Pull the unit forward and locate the serial on the sticker on the unit casing.
Note: The touchscreen unit is larger and more tightly fitted than the base radio. Be careful when removing it.

These are the Common Serial Formats
Based on the radio fitted to the 2020 Honda Insight:
U1234L5678– Classic Honda OEM formatHBM####– Used in Display Audio and nav-equipped units913A####– Some Alpine-manufactured radios
The 2020 Insight may have: base CD radio (U/L format), Display Audio 5"/7" (HBM format), or navigation unit (HBM format). All require a 5-digit unlock code.
Important Ensure you record the serial number, not the part number (which starts with 39100, 39101, or similar Honda part coding).
Locked Insight Radio? Here's Exactly How to Get the Code
Getting your radio code takes only a few simple steps.
- Find the radio's serial - this is the only info required by our side.
Unlike dealership lookup, no VIN is needed. - Enter the serial number into our generator above.
Our system checks it against a database of supported radios and automatically retrieves the matching radio code. - In most cases, the code appears instantly on the screen after payment and is also sent to your email for backup.
If we need to check it manually, you'll be notified before checkout. - Once you receive it, simply enter it into your radio to restore full functionality.
Inputting the Security Code
After locating the serial number and received the unlock code, the last step is entering it into your radio.
Honda original head units display a ENTER CODE message when ready for input.
The process is straightforward, but button layouts and confirmation methods may differ slightly depending on the radio version installed in your Insight.
Entering Process
To enter the code on the 2020 Honda Insight:
- Ignition ON. Radio shows "CODE" or "ENTER CODE".
- Non-touchscreen models: Press preset buttons 1-5 to select each digit, then press and hold button 6 to confirm.
- Display Audio touchscreen: An on-screen keypad is displayed. Tap each digit and press "Enter" or "OK".
Lockout: 3 wrong codes activate a 60-minute lockout. Leave ignition ON. Do not cycle the key or the timer resets.
Why Is the Radio Asking for a Code?
Honda's Display Audio system retains the same anti-theft design as earlier radios: losing battery power triggers a code request at next startup. Applies to both the base radio and the Display Audio unit.
- Battery replacement — by far the most frequent cause.
- Battery disconnect during repairs — any work that cuts battery power will re-engage the lock.
- Completely dead battery — a drained battery also triggers the request.
Note: a number of higher-end Display Audio models from the 2014–2021 period might not use a traditional code-based lock — if the radio never showed "CODE" after losing power, it may use a different anti-theft method linked to the vehicle VIN.
Understanding Unlock Issues with Your Insight
The Display Audio platform uses the same three-try lockout as older Honda radios. Recovery steps:
- Maintain the ignition in ON or ACC — avoid turning it off.
- Allow the full 60-minute period. The touchscreen may go to sleep during this time — that's normal.
- After 60 minutes, the radio re-displays "CODE" and another attempt is possible.
For touchscreen units, the lockout countdown operates even when the screen is off. Simply leave the vehicle running or the ignition on ACC for the full hour.
If the Display Audio screen comes on but shows the home screen without any "CODE" display, consider these points:
- Anti-theft may not have triggered — certain battery changes don't trigger the lock if done quickly enough.
- On some Display Audio units, the code prompt appears only on the audio portion of the screen, not the navigation display — give it a moment after startup.
- Check the Settings → System → Device Information route; if the serial is visible there, the unit could still be functional without a code.
If none of these apply, a fuse check is the next step — a blown fuse will stop the radio from showing any display at all.
The Display Audio era includes radios using different serial formats depending on which unit was fitted:
U####L####— base CD radio serial (10 characters, two halves).HBM####— Display Audio 5"/7" and navigation units.913A####— certain Alpine OEM configurations.
Part numbers on the same label start with 39100 or 39101 — do not submit these. When in doubt, use the Settings → Device Information menu or the 1+6 button method to display the serial directly from the radio.
Entry method depends on the specific radio in the 2014–2021 Insight:
- Non-touchscreen base radio: Use preset buttons 1–5 to cycle to each digit, then hold button 6 to confirm — same as older Honda platforms.
- Display Audio 5" or 7" touchscreen: An on-screen numeric keypad appears when the code prompt is active. Tap each digit and press OK or Enter on screen.
If the touchscreen is unresponsive, attempt the physical preset buttons — some units accept both input method. Make sure the screen is fully powered on before starting entry.
For Display Audio-era Honda radios, a rejected code most often means the serial was incorrectly noted. Both the button method and the settings menu can produce the correct serial — double-check that the serial you submitted came from the radio unit and not from an online database.
If the code was already entered once and rejected, stop and contact support before trying again — a second wrong attempt brings you closer to the 60-minute lockout. A free serial reverification is available on request.
