What Caused the Radio to Lock?
The single most common cause for a locked radio on Renault vehicles, but several other situations worth knowing:
- Battery replacement: The most frequent cause by far on Renaults. Renault radios lock every time the battery is disconnected or replaced. This is extremely common, even when the battery is only disconnected briefly.
- Second-hand purchase: The radio code is rarely passed on when a car changes hands. Private sellers and dealers frequently cannot provide it.
- Discharged battery: A battery drained from sitting unused triggers the code request when power is restored.
- Workshop or service work: Service that disconnects the battery — even routine maintenance — may activate the code request.
Can't Locate Your Radio Serial Number? Follow The Steps Below for Renault Clio 2009
The first part is to locate the radio's S/N.
Based on the head unit type used in your 2009 Clio, the S/N can be found either through the screen menu or by checking the label on the radio itself.
Follow the steps below to identify your serial quickly.
Radios Offered in the 2009 Clio
The 2009 Renault Clio Mk3 received a mid-cycle facelift (Phase 2). The single-DIN audio range continued, and a new integrated navigation option appeared on higher trims.
- Renault-Bosch Tuner List (single-DIN): Carried over as the standard audio head unit, identified by a single-DIN slot, segmented display and six numeric preset buttons.
- Renault Carminat TomTom: Newly available on Dynamique-grade trims from the 2009 facelift onwards, featuring an integrated 5.8-inch colour touchscreen with TomTom navigation built into the upper dashboard.
- Field check: If the centre dash carries a single-DIN audio unit with preset buttons, you have the Tuner List; if it has a fixed colour touchscreen above the air vents, you have the Carminat TomTom.
Access the Serial on the Radio Screen
The method for 2009 Renault Clio is this:
The 2009 Renault Clio is equipped with a Renault OEM radio or MediaNav system. Most Renault radios don't support an on-screen serial number retrieval method.
The serial number can be found on a sticker on the radio unit. The radio must be partially removed to read it. Certain newer Clio with MediaNav may show the serial in Settings → System.
Accessing the Serial Number Through the Radio Menu
On the 2009 Clio, only the Renault-Bosch Tuner List exposes its precode on the radio display. The Carminat TomTom does not present a serial used for unlock-code purposes through the audio interface, so it is not described here.
Renault-Bosch Tuner List
- Turn the ignition to ACC and power up the radio.
- If the unit is in CODE mode, leave the prompt on the display.
- Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 together for approximately five seconds.
- The display returns a four-character precode in the format letter + three digits.
- Note the precode exactly as shown; this is the serial that the code service requires.
Locate Serial on Clio's Radio Chassis
If the serial does not appear in menu, the next step is checking the radio itself.
Many Renault radios require physical access to the ID label attached to the unit.
Common approach:
- Start by completely turning off the engine - pull the key out.
- Then lift the radio surround.
- Next, loosen the mounting points and pull the radio forward.
- Look for a printed tag showing the serial number.
To access the serial on the 2009 Renault Clio:
- Turn off the vehicle.
- Find the release slots on each side of the radio. Renault radios typically use pin-release extraction slots.
- Insert extraction tools and slide the radio out.
- Locate the serial on the manufacturer label on the housing. It starts with PH.
Tip: Renault extraction tools are the standard DIN-style tools used for Fiat vehicles.
Manufacturer Label Inspection
When the display method is unavailable, the chassis label is the secondary source of the serial. The Tuner List is removed with four DIN keys; the Carminat TomTom is a deeply integrated dash module and is not suitable for self-removal.
Safety notice: Switch the ignition off, remove the key, disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a few minutes. Avoid yellow airbag wiring around the dashboard. Use plastic trim tools only and stop if any panel resists.
- Tools needed for the Tuner List: four Renault Mk3 DIN release keys (approximately 38 mm pin spacing), plastic trim tools, flashlight and phone camera.
- Insert each key into the four corner pinholes on the Tuner List fascia until the clips release.
- Pull the unit forward steadily using the keys; the chassis should slide out of its cage.
- Disconnect the rear antenna and harness only if needed to clear the unit.
- Read the printed or barcoded sticker on the top or side of the chassis (labelled S/N or Serial).
- For the Carminat TomTom: the screen module is integrated with the dashboard and surrounding trim, so professional service is recommended rather than attempting self-removal.

Standard Serial Number Patterns on This Radio
The 2009 Renault Clio radio serial prefixes:
BP####– Blaupunkt radio serial (most common)CC####– Continental radio serialPH####– Philips radio serialPR####– Other Renault OEM prefix
The serial is printed on the radio unit. Don't confuse it with the Renault part number.
Serial Number Format Guide for 2009 Renault Clio
The 2009 Clio uses two different head units with two different serial conventions; only the Tuner List has a short precode used for code lookup.
Renault-Bosch Tuner List
- Display precode: typically one letter followed by three digits, four characters total (for example V456 or A123).
- Chassis label serial: longer alphanumeric printed near a Renault part number block such as 8200; secondary reference only.
Renault Carminat TomTom
- The Carminat TomTom does not use the four-character Tuner List precode format. Its identifiers are tied to the navigation device rather than a Bosch audio precode and are typically read from labels on the unit body after professional removal.
Common mistakes: confusing the vehicle VIN (begins with VF1 on European Clios) with the radio serial, or submitting a long part number in place of the four-character precode.
How to Unlock a Renault Clio Radio After Power Loss
To get the code, you'll take only a few simple steps.
- Find your radio's serial number - this is the only information required by our side.
Unlike when contacting the dealer, no VIN or paperwork is needed. - When you've found the S/N, type it into the form above.
Our system checks it against a database of supported radios and automatically retrieves the matching radio code. - In most cases, the code will appear instantly on the screen after you pay and is also sent to your email , just in case.
If manual verification is required (rare situations), you'll be notified before checkout. - Once you receive it, simply enter it into your radio to restore full functionality.
Entering the Radio Security Code
When you obtain the correct unlock code based on the S/N, you can restore normal functionality by entering it into the unit.
The code entry process depends on the head unit design, but most 2009 Clio systems follow a similar structure using preset buttons, touch controls, or rotary knobs - depending on if it's a factory or an aftermarket unit.
You will typically see CODE displayed on screen.
Step-by-Step - The Correct Way to Enter It
To input the code on the 2009 Renault Clio:
- Ignition ON. Radio displays "CODE" or four dashes (----).
- Use preset buttons 1-4 to enter each digit of the 4-digit code. Each press advances the digit (0-9).
- Hold button 5 or button 6 to confirm.
Lockout: Multiple incorrect entries will cause a lockout. Leave the radio for approximately half an hour, then try again.
The Correct Way to Enter It
Code entry on the 2009 Clio depends on which head unit is fitted. Only the Tuner List exposes a documented manual entry process; the Carminat TomTom uses a different validation flow that is not described here.
Limited Attempt Warning: The Tuner List allows only a limited number of incorrect attempts before entering a WAIT lockout. Verify each digit before confirming.
Renault-Bosch Tuner List
- Turn the ignition to ACC and switch the radio on; the display should show CODE or 0000.
- Use preset 1 to step the first digit up to the required value.
- Use preset 2 to set the second digit.
- Use preset 3 to set the third digit.
- Use preset 4 to set the fourth digit.
- Press and hold preset 6 for around five seconds to confirm; the radio should beep and resume.
- If WAIT or ERROR appears, leave the radio powered on in ACC and allow the internal timer to clear.
Fixing Common Code Entry Problems for 2009 Clio
The serial number on Renault radios is on a label on the rear or side of the radio unit, only visible after removing the unit.
- What to look for: The serial starts with BP, CC, PH, or PR then 8–10 alphanumeric characters.
- Label condition: Labels on higher-mileage vehicles are sometimes worn. Take a well-lit close-up photo — a camera often reveals characters the eye misses.
- Removal tools: Pin-release extraction tools fit all Renault radios. Insert them into the holes on both sides of the radio and draw the unit out far enough to read the rear label.
Do not use the vehicle VIN or dashboard label number — these produce an incorrect code.
The radio shows "WAIT" / "SAFE" after 3 wrong code attempts, preventing further input until the timer resets.
How to reset it: Turn the ignition to ON and leave it there for a full 60 minutes. Switching off mid-wait starts the wait again from the beginning. The timer resets every time power is cut.
On Renault models, battery drain during a long wait is possible. Run the engine or connect a charger if possible to prevent the timer restarting.
Code entry on Renault passenger car radios uses the preset station buttons to build the code digit by digit.
- Button 1 controls the first digit — each press cycles from 0 to 9.
- Button 2 sets digit 2, button 3 digit 3, button 4 digit 4.
- Once all four digits are correct, press and hold button 5, button 6, or the Enter / AM-FM button to submit the entry.
Important: Some later Renault models use a touchscreen code entry pad. If a number pad appears on screen, tap it directly. No hold-to-confirm is needed.
Should the radio refuse your code, work through the following before entering it again.
- Check the serial format: Renault radios use serials starting with BP, CC, PH, or PR. Make sure you entered the correct serial from the radio label — not any other sticker inside the car.
- Look for digit confusion: With older Blaupunkt/Philips stickers, 0 and O, 1 and I, and 8 and B look similar. Take a clear photo and examine it carefully.
- Entry method: Each press of a preset button advances the digit by one. Rapid pressing may go past the right number. Press deliberately and count. Only confirm once all four digits are correct.
If it keeps failing? Send us your serial and order number and we'll check and reissue if needed.
If the radio powers on without prompting for a code, work through these steps:
- Force the code prompt: Pull the radio fuse briefly, refit, and turn the ignition on. The radio should then request the code.
- Check if already unlocked: When all functions work normally without restriction, it is not locked. You do not need to do anything.
- On MediaNav touchscreen versions: MediaNav does not show a code prompt the same way. Check Settings → System for unlock or serial options.
- Some units need ACC or ON: Older Renault radios sometimes only display the CODE screen when the ignition is in ACC or ON. Try both.
