Why Is the Radio Asking for a Code?
The single most common cause behind a locked radio on Renault vehicles, but several other situations worth knowing:
- Battery replacement: The most frequent cause by far on Renaults. Renault radios lock every time the battery is disconnected or replaced. This is extremely common, even during a very short disconnect.
- Buying a used Renault: The radio code is rarely passed on when a car changes hands. Private sellers and dealers frequently cannot provide it.
- Discharged battery: A completely flat battery activates the lock on reconnection or recharge.
- Service disconnect: Any work involving the battery — including an MOT, tyre change, or oil change — may activate the code request.
How the Code Retrieval Process Works for Renault Clio 2010
Car radios use security codes dependent on the radio unit itself rather than the vehicle model or production year.
- The system uses the Clio's radio serial to retrieve the unlock code.
- After entering the serial into the form above, the system identifies the radio family and retrieves the corresponding code.
- You can then enter the code directly into your Renault radio.
- This approach saves time compared to traditional methods for 2010 Renault Clio.
Understanding the Radio Serial Number and How to Locate It on 2010 Clio
The starting step is finding the radio serial number.
Many drivers assume the code depends on the Renault model or year, but actually, the whole process depends on the unique radio's serial number.
The serial is the key used to calculate the correct unlock code.
This is even better, because if you have bought an aftermarket radio, the VIN or other vehicle-specific data wouldn't be of much use.
Based on the radio version used, you may be able to retrieve the serial directly from the screen or by looking at the label on the radio chassis.
Which Head Unit Is in Your 2010 Clio?
The 2010 Renault Clio Mk3 (Phase 2) continued with two factory audio options. The single-DIN audio unit covers the bulk of the range while the integrated touchscreen navigation system appears on higher trims.
Renault-Bosch Tuner List (single-DIN): The standard audio head unit, identified by a single-DIN slot, segmented monochrome display and six numbered preset buttons. Found on most trims.
Renault Carminat TomTom: Available on Dynamique grades, fitted as an integrated 5.8-inch colour touchscreen high in the centre dash with TomTom navigation. Identifiable by the fixed screen above the air vents rather than a DIN slot.
If you are looking at a single-DIN unit with preset buttons, the procedures in this guide apply directly; the Carminat is a different module and its code-entry flow is not the Tuner List flow.
Access Your Serial Number via the Radio Screen
These are the steps you should follow for 2010 Renault Clio:
The 2010 Renault Clio comes with a Renault OEM radio or MediaNav system. Many Renault radios do not have an on-screen serial display method.
The serial number is located on a label on the radio unit. The radio must be extracted to read it. Some newer Clio with MediaNav may show the serial in Settings → System.
Display-Based Serial Number Retrieval
The Renault-Bosch Tuner List supports an on-screen precode readout. The Carminat TomTom does not return a usable audio-style precode through its screen, so it is not described here.
Renault-Bosch Tuner List. Turn the ignition to ACC and switch the radio on. If the radio is showing CODE, leave the prompt visible. Press and hold preset buttons 1 and 6 together for approximately five seconds. The display will return a four-character precode in the format letter + three digits (for example A123 or V456). Record the precode exactly as shown.
Locate Serial on Clio's Radio Chassis
If the serial number cannot be accessed on-screen, use the removal method.
Most Renault Clio factory radios include a label with the serial number printed on the casing.
Step-by-Step Approach:
- Turn off the vehicle.
- Detach the dashboard frame surrounding the radio.
- Release the mounting bolts.
- Pull the unit forward to access the label.
The serial number is usually located near the barcode.
To retrieve the serial on the 2010 Renault Clio:
- Power down the vehicle.
- Find the release slots on both sides of the radio. Renault radios commonly use DIN-style removal holes.
- Insert radio release keys and slide the radio forward.
- Find the serial on the barcode label on the chassis. It starts with PR.
Note: Renault extraction tools are the same European-style tools used for Fiat vehicles.
View the Serial by Pulling Out the Unit
The chassis label is the fallback serial source when the display method cannot be used. The Tuner List is held in a DIN cage and released with four corner keys; the Carminat TomTom is integrated into the dashboard and is not suitable for self-removal.
Safety notice. Switch the ignition off, remove the key, disconnect the negative battery terminal and wait a few minutes before working. Avoid all yellow airbag connectors near the dashboard. Use plastic trim tools and stop if a panel does not release smoothly.
Tools. Four Renault Mk3 DIN release keys (pin spacing approximately 38 mm), plastic trim tools, a small flashlight and a phone camera.
Removal of the Tuner List. Insert all four keys into the corner pinholes on the radio fascia and push them home until the spring clips release. Pull the unit forward evenly using the keys as a grip; the chassis should slide cleanly out of its cage. Once the rear connectors are accessible, disconnect the antenna and main harness only if you need to fully free the unit. Look on the top or side of the chassis for the manufacturer sticker; the serial is labelled S/N or Serial. Photograph the label and double-check ambiguous characters (0 vs O, 1 vs I) before submitting.
Carminat TomTom. The screen module is integrated with the upper dashboard and surrounding trim panels. Removal requires advanced disassembly and risks damage to clips and surfaces, so professional service is recommended rather than self-removal.

How Serial Numbers Usually Look on These Clio Radios
The 2010 Renault Clio radio serial formats:
BP####– Blaupunkt radio serial (standard)CC####– Continental radio serialPH####– Philips radio serialPR####– Other Renault OEM prefix
The serial is printed on the radio casing. Do not mistake it with the Renault part number.
S/N Patterns and Prefixes
The 2010 Clio uses two head units with two different identifier conventions; only the Tuner List has a short precode used for code lookup, and that is what users submit.
Renault-Bosch Tuner List. The display precode typically consists of one letter followed by three digits, for a total of four characters (for example V456 or S999). The chassis label may also carry a longer alphanumeric serial alongside a Renault part number block such as 8200; this is useful as a secondary cross-check but is not the precode.
Renault Carminat TomTom. The Carminat does not use the Tuner List letter + 3-digit precode format. Its identifiers are tied to the integrated navigation device and are typically read from labels on the unit body after professional removal.
Validation tips: do not submit the vehicle VIN (begins with VF1 on European Clios) as a radio serial; check character pairs that look alike (0 vs O, 1 vs I, 8 vs B); and submit the precode in upper case.
Code Entry Process for 2010 Clio
After generating the correct unlock code based on the serial number, you can restore default functionality by entering it into the unit.
The code entry process depends on the control layout, but most 2010 Clio systems follow a similar structure using preset buttons, touch controls, or rotary knobs - depending on if it's a factory or an aftermarket unit.
You will typically see CODE displayed on screen.
In-depth Entering Instructions for Clio 2010
To input the code on the 2010 Renault Clio:
- Ignition ON. Radio displays "CODE" or four dashes (----).
- Use preset buttons 1-4 to enter each digit of the 4-digit code. Each press advances the digit (0-9).
- Press and hold button 5 or button 6 to confirm.
Lockout: Several wrong entries will trigger a lockout. Turn off the radio for about 30 minutes, then retry.
Entering Process Explained
Code entry on the 2010 Clio depends on the head unit. Only the Renault-Bosch Tuner List uses a documented manual entry via the preset buttons.
Limited Attempt Warning. The Tuner List allows only a limited number of incorrect attempts before entering a WAIT lockout. Confirm every digit before pressing the hold button.
Renault-Bosch Tuner List. Turn the ignition to ACC and switch the radio on; the display should show CODE or 0000. Press preset 1 repeatedly to step the first digit to the required value. Use preset 2 for the second digit, preset 3 for the third digit and preset 4 for the fourth digit. Press and hold preset 6 for approximately five seconds to confirm; the radio should beep and resume normal operation. If WAIT or ERROR appears, leave the radio powered on in ACC and allow the internal timer to clear before reattempting.
Understanding Unlock Issues with Your Clio
The serial number on Renault radios can be found on a sticker on the rear or side of the radio unit, only accessible after removing the unit.
- What to look for: Look for a string beginning with BP, CC, PH, or PR followed by 8–10 alphanumeric characters.
- Label condition: Older Renault labels can be faded. Photograph under good light and zoom in — a camera often reveals characters the eye misses.
- How to access the serial: Pin-release extraction tools work on all Renault models. Insert them into the holes on both sides of the radio and pull forward.
Never submit the VIN or a part number — they are not the radio serial and will generate the wrong result.
If the radio rejects your code, work through these points before making another attempt.
- Check the serial format: Renault radios use serials starting with BP, CC, PH, or PR. Confirm you entered the full serial from the radio label — not any other sticker inside the car.
- Check for misread characters: On worn or faded labels, 0 and O, 1 and I, and 8 and B look similar. Take a clear photo and examine it carefully.
- Button sequence: Each press of a preset button advances the digit by one. Rapid pressing may go past the right number. Count each press and take it slowly. Only confirm once all four digits are correct.

Entering the unlock code on Renault passenger car radios relies on the preset station buttons to dial in the code digit by digit.
- Button 1 sets the first digit — pressing it cycles from 0 to 9.
- Button 2 controls digit 2, button 3 digit 3, button 4 digit 4.
- After setting all digits, hold down button 5, button 6, or the Enter / AM-FM button to confirm.
Note: Newer Renault models with a MediaNav touchscreen use a touchscreen code entry pad. If a number pad appears on screen, tap it directly. The touchscreen confirms automatically.
Should "CODE" or the four dashes not appear, try the following:
- Trigger the code request: Disconnect the battery for 30 seconds, refit, and turn the ignition on. The CODE prompt should appear.
- It may already be working: When all functions work normally without restriction, it is not locked. You do not need to do anything.
- MediaNav units: Renault MediaNav does not show a code prompt the same way. Check Settings → System for unlock or serial options.
- Some units need ACC or ON: Some Blaupunkt/Philips units sometimes only display the CODE screen when the ignition is in ACC or ON. Check both positions.
The screen reads "WAIT" or "SAFE" after 3 wrong code attempts, blocking further input until the timer runs down.
Clearing the wait: Turn the ignition to ON and leave it there for a full 60 minutes. Turning the ignition off restarts the 60-minute timer. This is particularly important — the timer does not pause, it restarts.
With Renault vehicles, battery drain during a long wait is possible. Keep the engine idling or use a battery maintainer if possible to prevent the timer restarting.
