First: Actually Wait the 30 Minutes

That "Wait 30 minutes" message is an anti-theft lockout timer. On Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram radios it appears after three consecutive wrong code attempts - the radio switches from CODE to WAIT and starts a cooldown. The catch: the timer only counts down while the radio is powered, meaning 30 continuous minutes with the ignition in RUN or ACC. If you turned the car off, the countdown paused right there. You do not have to sit in the driveway either - driving the car counts, since the radio stays powered the whole trip.

So step one is simple: leave the ignition in RUN or ACC (or just drive) for a full uninterrupted 30 minutes, then try again - the display should switch back to CODE. If you have already done that - or the timer has been showing for an hour, a day, or since last week - the countdown is not running. The radio software is frozen. Everything below is about forcing that software to restart.

Why the Timer Gets Stuck

The lockout counter lives in the radio module. If the head unit crashes, browns out during a jump start, or loses power in the middle of the countdown, the counter can stop advancing while the message stays on screen forever. A reboot rebuilds that state. Nothing below erases your anti-theft code or damages the module - the code itself lives in memory and survives a reset.

Important: a reset clears the frozen timer. It does not give you the radio code. Once the radio is responsive again it will still ask for the code, and that code is recovered from your radio serial number.

First Work Out Which Uconnect You Have

The resets below are version-specific, so 30 seconds of identification saves a lot of random button holding:

  • Uconnect 430 / 430N (RB5 / RHB): 6.5 inch screen framed by physical buttons and two knobs, common in 2009-2016 Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram. Use the faceplate hold (Method 4).
  • Uconnect 5.0 / 8.4 (RA2 / RA3 / RA4): 5 or 8.4 inch touchscreen with climate buttons below it, roughly 2013-2017. The temperature arrow engineering menu (Method 3) is the go-to.
  • Uconnect 4 / 4C: gloss edge-to-edge 7, 8.4 or 12 inch screen, roughly 2017-2021. Try the knob reset (Method 1), the Settings menu (Method 2) or the corner hold (Method 5).
  • Uconnect 5: 2021+ vehicles, fast Android-based interface, screens up to 12.3 inches. Knob reset (Method 1) and Settings menu (Method 2).

Not sure? Hold the temperature UP + temperature DOWN + front defrost buttons for about 5 seconds to open dealer mode, then check Radio Part Information - it lists the exact model and software version.

Seven Ways to Reset a Frozen Radio

Work down the list in order. The first methods are soft resets that keep your settings; the last ones cut power entirely. Not every method exists on every radio - if a button combination does nothing after 20 seconds, move on to the next one.

Method 1 - The 2-Button Soft Reset (Fastest)

This restarts the radio software without erasing your personal settings or saved stations. Start here.

  1. Turn the ignition to the RUN or ACC position.
  2. Press and hold the Volume knob and the Tune / Scroll knob at the same time.
  3. Keep holding both knobs down for 10 to 20 seconds.
  4. Release when the screen goes black or the brand logo appears.
  5. Wait for the system to reboot completely before touching anything.

Method 2 - Factory Reset From the Settings Menu

If the touchscreen still responds to taps - the timer message is showing but you can still reach the menus - you can trigger the reset from inside the system instead of using button combinations. The exact wording changes between Uconnect 4, Uconnect 5 and the older 8.4 units, but the path is the same.

  1. With the ignition in RUN, tap the Settings gear icon (or the Apps / More button, then Settings).
  2. Open System.
  3. Scroll to Reset, Restore Factory Settings or Reset All Settings.
  4. Confirm and do not touch anything while the unit reboots - it can take a couple of minutes.

Method 3 - The Hot and Cold Temperature Arrow Reset (Engineering Menu)

This opens a hidden developer service screen that can force-reboot or wipe the radio system. It is the most reliable fix for a stuck timer on Uconnect units.

  1. Set vehicle power to ACC or RUN.
  2. Locate the physical climate buttons directly below the touchscreen.
  3. Press and hold the driver temperature UP (red / hot) and driver temperature DOWN (blue / cold) arrows at the same time.
  4. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds until the screen changes to a plain text Engineering Menu.
  5. Scroll down and select Reset Radio or Reset to Factory Default.

Method 4 - The Multi-Button Faceplate Hold (Older 430 / 430N Units)

For older Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler and Ram trucks with physical navigation buttons along the side of the screen.

  1. Turn on the radio.
  2. Press and hold the Menu, Radio and Media faceplate buttons at exactly the same time.
  3. Hold for 10 seconds until the screen shifts into Service Mode.
  4. Navigate to page 2, select option 8 (PND), then choose Restore Factory Default.

Method 5 - The Screen Corner Hold (Uconnect 4 / 4C)

Used mainly on newer gloss-screen setups when the system is completely frozen and no buttons respond.

  1. Put the car in RUN mode - engine off, foot off the brake, press Start twice.
  2. Press your finger directly on the top-right corner of the touchscreen.
  3. Keep it there for 15 seconds. Do not lift it until the screen goes pitch black and reboots with the brand logo.

Method 6 - The Fuse Pull (Safest Power Reset)

If no button combination responds, cut power to the radio module directly.

  1. Turn off the vehicle and remove the key.
  2. Open the fuse box - usually under the steering column, behind the glove box, or under the hood.
  3. Find the Radio / Uconnect fuse using the diagram on the fuse box cover or in your owner manual.
  4. Pull the fuse with a fuse puller or needle-nose pliers.
  5. Wait 5 to 10 minutes so residual power drains.
  6. Refit the fuse and start the vehicle.

Method 7 - Battery Disconnect (Full System Reset)

The last resort. This resets every computer module in the car, so use it only if everything above failed.

  1. Turn the vehicle off completely.
  2. Pop the hood and locate the battery.
  3. Loosen the nut on the negative (black, "-") terminal.
  4. Remove the cable and set it aside so it cannot touch metal.
  5. Wait 15 minutes for the system to fully drain its memory.
  6. Reconnect the cable, tighten the nut, and start the car.

Special Case: RH3 Radio Locked Out Showing Code 0000

On some Ram ProMaster and other RH3 units the radio locks out and displays 0000 instead of a normal code prompt or timer. That is a different fault to a frozen countdown, and the resets above usually will not shift it. This walkthrough covers what owners do in that specific case:

The Timer Is Gone - Now It Wants a Code

Once the reset works, most radios come back asking for the anti-theft code rather than showing the timer. That is progress: a screen asking for a code is a solvable problem. The code is derived from your radio serial number, not from the VIN (VIN-based codes only exist for Renault and Dacia).

The serial number (starting with T00) on the label of a Harman Uconnect radio - this is what generates your code.

Careful on the next attempt: entering the wrong code again restarts the lockout timer. Get the correct code first, then enter it once.

What If It Asks for a PIN After the Reset?

Some units come back from the engineering menu asking for a dealer PIN or a security code instead of the usual radio code. If that happens, note your exact year, model and radio type - the correct button combination and the location of the backup security card differ between model years. Send those details to our support team and we will confirm which path applies to your unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

The lockout countdown only advances while the radio is powered - on most Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram units that means the ignition must be in RUN or ACC. If the car was switched off, the timer never moved. If you did leave it powered for a full 30 minutes and the message is still there, the radio software has frozen and the counter is stuck. A soft reset (volume knob + tune knob held for 10-20 seconds) or the temperature-arrow engineering menu reset will clear it.

No. The countdown needs powered time - the radio must sit in the WAIT state with the ignition in RUN or ACC for 30 continuous minutes. Time spent with the battery disconnected does not count toward it, so a disconnect neither shortens nor cheats the timer; at best the radio comes back still in WAIT, and at worst you lose presets and clock settings for nothing. The one legitimate shortcut is that you can drive the car during the countdown, since the radio stays powered while you drive. Save the battery disconnect for a genuinely frozen unit that ignores every button.

No. The anti-theft code is stored in the radio module memory and survives every reset described here, including a full battery disconnect. A reset clears the frozen lockout timer and restarts the software, nothing more. After the reset the radio will still ask for the same code it wanted before, so you still need to recover that code from the radio serial number.

Start with the 2-button soft reset - hold the volume knob and the tune/scroll knob together for 10 to 20 seconds with the ignition in RUN or ACC. It keeps your settings and takes seconds. If nothing happens, try the temperature arrow engineering menu, then the model-specific combinations, and only then the fuse pull or battery disconnect. Work from the least invasive to the most invasive.

Not every combination exists on every unit, and they vary by model year. Hold each combination for at least 20 seconds before giving up, and try the dual-zone variant (driver temp UP + passenger temp UP) if the hot/cold pair fails. If no combination responds at all, the head unit is likely fully hung - pull the radio fuse for 5 to 10 minutes, or disconnect the negative battery terminal for 15 minutes, which cuts power to the module and forces a cold boot.

It is safe for the radio, but it resets every module in the car. Expect to lose your radio presets and the clock, and on some vehicles the window auto-up function and steering angle sensor need to be recalibrated by cycling them. Always remove the negative terminal first and keep the cable away from any metal. Because of those side effects, use the fuse pull instead whenever you can identify the radio fuse.

The code is calculated from your radio serial number, which you can usually read on the screen through a dealer/service menu or from the label on the radio chassis after removal. Enter that serial on our homepage and the matching code is generated and delivered instantly, from $9.99. The VIN does not work for this - a radio code from the VIN only exists for Renault and Dacia; every other make needs the radio serial number.
